Distinguished loads - 45 Auto Rim loads Empty 45 Auto Rim loads

Post by oldsalt444 Fri May 10, 2019 8:39 pm

Having acquired an S&W 1955 Target revolver, I'm looking for a general consensus of what loads are being used for bullseye.  My plan is to use Auto Rim for the long line and ACP in moon clips for the short line.  So can I hear from you revolver fans?

I don't think you can beat 200 JSWC and 4.8 BE

My favorite load is a tiny bit stouter. I like the 185gr XTP in front of 7.8 gr of Unique. Fun to shoot and accurate at about 900fps.

If only you had a match to shoot it at.

John, I still have lots of scopes for sale (not really) if you don't feel like waiting for yours to come back on warranty.  Very Happy We have two matches up here this month A 2700 near Portland on the 18th and a 2700 near Eugene on the 19th. As old as I'm feeling this month I will have to choose one. You can come shoot the other one for me. I'm sure no one would mind. Or come shoot a wheel gun with us. I have spares.

Here is a reconstruct of the shots on two target centers with my 1955 Model pictured in the recent revolver thread.

Shot #1 is penciled as I recall it.  I lowered the sight after shot #1.  Shots 2-5 all felt and looked good in the sights.  So good that my confidence in gun, ammo, and self stayed high.  I put up a new center and moved the rear sight left and fired the second five shots.

There is another factor here of luck.  I was lucky that the two sight moves were just right.  That does not always happen.  My point here is not my great groups.  It's more about the confidence, in gun and ammo, and self, plus a measure of luck and perfect shooting conditions with no distractions.

That was a good day.  And that 200 JSWC Hornady and 4.8 BE is really good.

Today I have confidence in my knowledge, but not in my practice.

Bob,

Long line. Magnus #801 185gr LSWC and 4.0gr Vihtavouri N310

Short. Bobs 160gr LSWC 3.2-3.3 Bullseye

Need to make a big upward elevation adjustment when going from long too short.

I'm only using AR cases rather than moon clips.  You can get speed loaders for the 45AR cases HKS.

I'm a believer in the second coming, just don't know when.  At least there's Sunnyvale this month.

Greetings,

The 25-2, Model of 1955, has cylinder throats that range from 0.452" to 0.456".

It would be worth the effort to measure your gun.

I just bought a replacement cylinder and the throats measure 0.456".

Jacketed bullets of 0.451" and 0.452" are more forgiving than the same size with cast Lead.

Surprisingly, all the barrels I have measured gauge 0.451"-0.452". And they are six groove.

Cheers,

Dave

There might be a State Championship this year. Tune up that wheelgun!

I don't have pictures because I threw the target in the trash. I was set up at 25 yds today and remembered to bring some Auto rim so I could compare groups for you. After zeroing I put 10 shots into the target and they all held the 10 ring. Barely. There was no group just 10 shots in the 10. Since I was using a MDII I just set the sights back to zero and shot over the target with 3.8 gr BE and 185gr L-SWC. They all held the X. It reminded me why I save them for hunting loads. Bigger targets.

Thanks Len.  Was that a Magnus 185 swaged hollow point?

No, that was with T&B 185gr LSWC. Not hollow point. I have a bunch of T&B so I shoot it a lot in practice. Shot it in all my matches before finding the LSWCHP from Zero/Magnus.
