Reloading 32 S&W Long
looking thru old posts it seems that most discussions are about loads with lead bullets (HBWC).-
Is there a reason lead is preferred over Jacketed bullets in the 32 S&W long?
Are quality lead bullets inherently more accurate?
Thanks for sharing your insights,
Glenn

Re: Reloading 32 S&W Long
32 long pistols cannot use jacketed RN type bullets that stick out of the case mouth; they will not fit the magazine. That's why HBWC are used becsuse they seat flush. I'm also not aware of a jacketed wadcutter for this caliber. So 99.9% are using lead bullets.

Re: Reloading 32 S&W Long
I have tried Meister 78gr LRN in practice at 50 yards single shot (non-mag fed).
I do the same thing in 32acp with 85gr XTP's.

Wes,
What is your load in 32acp with the 85gr XTP? OAL?

Checked the data tag on my Star:Dr.Don wrote:Wes,

50 yards - TiteWad at 1.2grs, 85gr XTP, and .910" OAL (single load and better results than using the 60gr XTP, Thanks Dave!).
25 yards - TiteWad at 1.2grs, 71gr LRN, and .945" OAL (because it feeds).
I have Dr. Young's ERMA for which Dave Wilson made a 32acp barrel in .311 groove dia x 12" twist (Kreiger blank).
I also have a Walther GSP barrel in .312 x 16" (green Mountain blank) that Dave made way back in 2004 or 5 when we were messing around. Going to dig that out and try it again as it feeds like a Pardini.
Hope this helps.

Re: Reloading 32 S&W Long
Thanks Wes. I have not tried Titewad.
In my Pardini the 85XTP will load and feed from the magazine at .945 OAL, but the bullet strikes the leade and gets pushed back to about .919 OAL. It also cannot be manually extracted because the leade has grabbed it. Seated to OAL .915 seems to feed and extract ok; this puts the case mouth just above the top of the cannelure on that bullet. Note that I have not fired this bullet in the Pardini yet.

Re: Reloading 32 S&W Long
May be a crazy idea, but has anyone tried loading round nose bullets in a .32 S&W "short" case and shoot it in a pistol chambered for .32 S&W Long wadcutter? The over all length for a .32 wadcutter is 0.920, and the over all length for a .32 S&W "short" with round nose bullet is 0.920. So the "short" will fit in the wadcutter magazine. The only problem I can think of is the jump to the rifling, but maybe that doesn't affect things?

Or just turning the 32ACP bullet around backwards?

Re: Reloading 32 S&W Long
Greetings,
Yes, I did cut down some 32 Long cases to the same length as a 32 ACP.
I then loaded them with a load known to be accurate in a Pardini 32 ACP.
The resultant groups were 8-ring at 50 yards via a barrel tester.
Lesson learned???
Buy the right tool for the job.
Cheers,
Dave

Just for fun, I loaded some RN bullets in the 32l brass, just pushed them in flush so they would load in the magazine. Had trouble hitting the target.

Re: Reloading 32 S&W Long
Before I was able to get some H&N WC's I was using Hornady 90gr SWC's. I would seat them .967 with 1.5-1.6 N310 and would easily hold the ten ring. Kind of a moot point now since they are discontinued. The bumped up Speers seem to be the way to go.
