158 loads for S&W 10-6

All,

Like the title says, I am looking for a 158gr load for the 10-6.  I have only 2 powders I will use, Bullseye and Trail Boss, because I have a lot of it. I have a box of Missouri Bullet Co. 158 swc's, but I can buy some others like Zero's. I want a load that is "regulated" for the fixed sights on the 4" barrel.

Others have mentioned that SWC cast bullets usually don't work at 50 yards very well. Try buying the Zero and you should be around 3.0-3.2gr of Bullseye. There are plenty of posts on this subject via the search. Recent posts stating how hard it is to reload a good 50 yard load. Many buy Magtech round nose 158gr.

Thanks for the reply.  I will get some Zero's on the way.  I did get to shoot some of the Missouri 158 swc's  that I had loaded last year.  They shot ok, but were 12" high at 25 yards.  I don't recall how much bullseye were in the cases, but they clocked 808 fps on average.  At 50 yards it was ugly.

3.8 grains of BE, Zero 158 LRN, Remington case and primer @25 yards.  12 shot average was 843fps @ 10 feet with a sd of 9fps.  6:00 wind 15 to 20 mph.

If you are shooting the 10-6 for the CMP Service Pistol matches, you will be limited to metal jacketed or metal plated bullets. 

For NRA distinguished:  Ammunition- Any safe .38 caliber ammunition using the 158 grain round nose or Semi-Wadcutter bullet only.  (No mention any longer of lead only.)

Went Distinguished using this loading exclusively in my K-38.
Magtech makes a very similar load that is just as good if not better.

Distinguished Revolver Matches still allow lead bullets or do they have to be jacketed?

NRA Distinguished Revolver and CMP EIC Pistol matches are two different games with different rules. Now you need another rule book....
