I use that bullet for the long line only. Joe Fobes makes them with Vitavhori, but you probably wont be able to get that anymore. Use a .468 crimp...I'll have to double check OAL...
Joe has also used 4.2gr Clays, I use 4.0 Bullseye, and Marcus Chang uses 3.8 bullseye.

Yup the N 310 is awesome! But I have heard they may have shut down! I got about two seasons worth of powder on hand. Then?
Re: nosler 185 comp hp with bullseye
Looks like you will have to go back to bullseye then. I agree that it's dirty, but it meters great, is super forgiving, and really accurate. You could even save .5gr/round and make that pound stretch a little farther. Besides, if it wasn't so dirty, I would NEVER clean my 1911. Right now I'm only cleaning it once a year or so....about 1500 rounds worth.

Re: nosler 185 comp hp with bullseye
A while back, out of a barrel tester, my Noslers printed just barely over an inch at 50 yards with 4.5gr of Bullseye, and just under an inch with 4.3gr of N310...(CTC)...
I did a lot of extra work for my 50 yard Nosler rounds back then, though:
0 - start with once-fired WW brass
1 - deprime and size with Square Deal
2 - uniform the primer pocket with a Sinclair International tool
3 - hand prime WLP primers
4 - charge and bell (very slightly) with Square Deal
5 - seat with a specially built rod that makes sure the bullet is straight
-- - I used J.B. Weld to create an exact insert for the Nosler cavity on
-- - a rod that fit through the hole in the center of my seating die. I
-- - would set the bullet on top of the case and slide the rod down until
-- - the J.B. Weld portion fit into the hollow point and then seat the
-- - bullet with the Square Deal to ~1.197 inches. This would push the
-- - rod upward and I would hold it while I extracted the cartridge from
-- - the die.
6 - crimp with the Square Deal to .470 inch

Thanks Ed, just a heads up, in 2006 when i was shooting my best before injuring my shoulder and taking 5 years off the V-310 i used had more kick that the stuff i bought in 2011. All i can say is my load which was the same as the marines were using 4.3 when loaded was light compared to the older version. I bumped it to 4.5 and it felt like my older load.

Re: nosler 185 comp hp with bullseye
DavidR and Ed Hall are correct. Dave Salyer and Al Dorman, who first developed the Nosler bullet load for bullseye pistol shooting gave it to the USMC. Long ago, Dave (via the old Bullseye List) gave me the 4.5 grains of Alliant Bullseye load for 50 yards as an alternative to the VV 310 load. I have machine rest tested that load in many good pistols and it always gave great groups (around 2" 10 shot groups at 50 yards). I've passed on the same load and one of the guys at my club shot a machine rest group of less than an inch with a relatively new Rock River wad gun. We used new Starline brass and W-W large pistol primers.

I'm certainly no high master, but I finally came to the same conclusion through much trial and error. I use 4.6g Bullseye with a 185g Remington head. Got a 2.08" 10shot @50yds. I heard that the Remington head was used in Federal Match ammo. Noslers never worked in my pistol.

I have never seen a good pistol that wouldn't group very well with the Nosler with the proper powder charge, but there are always anomalies. When you say a Remington head, just what bullet design are you talking about?tenx9 wrote:I'm certainly no high master, but I finally came to the same conclusion through much trial and error. The remington 185 button nose fmj swc is a accurate bullet i use to shoot them till they got hard to find. The best ransome test i had was 1.25'' at 50yds with 4.3gr of v-310

What are WST loads with the nosler or zero clone?

Re: nosler 185 comp hp with bullseye
WST loads about the same as bullseye. Most fast powders in bullseye loads, 185 or 200 lswc loads about the same give or take a 1/0th of a grain. Bullseye,Clays,WST, tightgroup, V-310 and there are a few more. The heavier the bullet the lighter the powder charge. 185 3.8-4.2, 200 3.6-4.0 works good in most guns. FMJ 185s go about 4.2-4.6

I haven't used WST with the Nosler 185 gr. JHP, but a popular load of 4.5 grains of Bullseye gives around 830 fps out of my Clark wad gun. Hope that helps.
