Camp Perry 2021
This is a thread to share the Canp Perry experience with those who cannot attend this year.
For me, 2021 is both a return after missing both 2019 and 2020 and the beginning of a new normal with the NRA having left for Camp Atterbury and the CMP running the whole show. It's good to be back.
The first surprising thing about Perry 2021, at least for me, is the number of shooters here. I thought that attendance would be down maybe a third as some shooters opted to go to the NRA Nationals instead. But the RV park is full and there are no lodging vacancies, even in the barracks.
This leads to the second surprise... the long wait to check in with the CMP. It's the same setup in the Arcade as in previous years, but with more matches to process the system seems to have bogged down some. I got in line mid-afternoon yesterday (probably the worst possible time) and didn't finish until two hours later. Next year, I will have to arrive earlier so I can finish before the practice range closes.

Re: Camp Perry 2021
Sunday lines were non-existent, hint.
Yes, because registration and scorecards were integrated and not segregated as before it took many hours to clear the line.
THEN you had to get all firearms certified on your scorecards.
Very tedious.
But, about 800+ various entries. I’ve heard Atterbury has about 100 now.

Today's weather: Damp, drizzly, gray, breezy, and about 72 degrees. Everything is wet but there's no flooding (yet).

I knew that CMP would be weighing ball gun triggers, as always, but having to get every pistol checked for the .22, CF and .45 matches was unexpected. The CMP armorers had a long day yesterday.

What is the process with backup guns?

Weigh triggers
If it’s not certified no EIC
Otherwise spot checks do happen

Re: Camp Perry 2021
The armorer writes the last three digits of the pistol's serial number on the back of the score sheet. You can have up to three pistols checked for each match.
By the way, the CMP is using the full-sized 8.5x11" score cards for all matches, so bringing a full-sized clipboard is something to consider.

Thanks for the info. Due to work constraints I can only shoot the 22EIC and the Trophy Matches.
I have no issue with the full size score cards, majority of the matches I shoot now use them.

There is a lot wrong. Supposed to be bad weather all week. Commercial row is a shadow of its former self. I’m thinking last trip.

I can tell you right now. Nobody is wearing a face mask, but if I had to sign up under those conditions, I wouldn’t be here as a vendor either.

Re: Camp Perry 2021
Hey, let's talk about something positive here, shall we? me, I'm just so happy to be here again and see ya'll good old friends again and shoot with you You know, we're not gonna be around forever, so I just cherish these precious moments.
And in case no one noticed yet, now we have an official 2-min prep period when we move to the short line, not the usual "We will give you enough time to adjust your equipment" - isn't it great? Somebody should tell the NRA about it
But yes, Commercial row is a sad place...

After noon the sun came out and the wind got stronger. Since it was blowing from behind the firing line it wasn't much of a factor.
I also found one vendor on Commercial Row with primers for sale. They were $140/1000 so I passed.

Re: Camp Perry 2021
Notable absences from Commercial Row:
Clark Custom
Fin, Feather and Fur
Springfield Armory
Zero Bullets
Armalite
Champion Shooter's Supplies (gone forever)
The CMP store still has M1 Garands and M1903 and M1917 rifles. I don't think they have any ammo this year.

Re: Camp Perry 2021
They had 250 walk ins for the match, last count was 875 shooters. When did you ever see that many?
Not in my time. As Jeff said, in the divorce, NRA got the car, CMP got the house. It's nice to see people again. If you see a tall redhead with a beard, introduce yourself please. The old Lava list used teal names. Here l know only a few

Re: Camp Perry 2021
There is no doubt that attendance at the NRA Nationals will be down. A variety of reasons. The NRA stood down and refused to sanction matches for long periods last year. The CMP certainly exploited that gap. Please remember though, the CMP is most likely counting all competitors, even those only signed up for one or two matches. ( And there are a lot of matches here)bruce martindale wrote:They had 250 walk ins for the match, last count was 875 shooters. When did you ever see that many?

If in 2018 we had a combined count for competitors shooting either the NRA or CMP portion of the match, how many would that be?
Anecdotally, everyone in my party, there are seven of us, is shooting either relay 1 or relay 2. There doesn’t seem to be a relay three. Now how many ranges will be used, for those two relays, I cannot say.

Which is why, I assume, there is no practice/ or function test range.james r chapman wrote:4 ranges I’ve been told.
Team captain went in to sign the team up yesterday afternoon. Two people ahead of him in line. He said this should be quick. He walked out an hour later.

Re: Camp Perry 2021
Conditions for first relay today were just about perfect: dry and warm with just a little wind and a little sun. No eagles or boaters were endangering themselves downrange and the turning targets turned at the right times.
Also, the "Twisted Sister House of Hunger" food trailer is now parked by the armorers so there is at least one food option here besides sandwiches from the PX.

Work crews are tearing out the railroad tracks that run by the road leading into Camp Perry. Although those tracks haven't been used for many years I am still sad to see them go.

Kudos to the CMP for finally putting the old turning targets out of their misery. That is a definite upgrade to the Camp Perry experience.
