Camp Perry 2021
First topic message reminder :
This is a thread to share the Canp Perry experience with those who cannot attend this year.
For me, 2021 is both a return after missing both 2019 and 2020 and the beginning of a new normal with the NRA having left for Camp Atterbury and the CMP running the whole show. It's good to be back.
The first surprising thing about Perry 2021, at least for me, is the number of shooters here. I thought that attendance would be down maybe a third as some shooters opted to go to the NRA Nationals instead. But the RV park is full and there are no lodging vacancies, even in the barracks.
This leads to the second surprise... the long wait to check in with the CMP. It's the same setup in the Arcade as in previous years, but with more matches to process the system seems to have bogged down some. I got in line mid-afternoon yesterday (probably the worst possible time) and didn't finish until two hours later. Next year, I will have to arrive earlier so I can finish before the practice range closes.

Thanks to all posting daily updates about the 2021 Camp Perry experience for the unfortunate souls that were unable to attend this year.

Those railroad tracks always gave me an Arbeit Macht Frei vibe. Creeped me out.
Thanks for all of the Camp Perry match reports, folks. Be safe, have fun, and shoot well.

Re: Camp Perry 2021
The CMP is not following the relay pattern used by the NRA. Under the old regime, most of the Masters and High Masters shot the Prelim Agg on 1st relay, then .22 on 1st, CF on 3rd and .45 on 2nd. The reason, as I understood it, was to give the best shooters maximum access to the best conditions early in the morning, but still rotating the relays so everyone had to deal with the wind and heat later in the day.
Now CMP is keeping the relays fixed. You either shoot 1st relay or 2nd relay for all three days of the 2700. (The Prelim Agg is gone.)
I appreciate getting to shoot in the early morning calm but I was hoping to be able to sleep later and still have a leisurely breakfast a few times.

I like the new egalitarian style. Nothing seemed rushed or stressful. Everyone was having a good time. Pleasantly surprised. Several of my friends were close by on the line. Old home week.

I have to say I'm pretty happy so far. Things are well run. Awesome to see so many people there. Good for the sport. Everything has started on time so far, although team matches today were delayed because of a boat in the line of fire during the second relay of EIC matches

Re: Camp Perry 2021
I had very low expectations initially and now I'm very pleasantly surprised by how smooth they run it this time. Of course, there are still three days left to screw things up but I must say CMP does a pretty darn good job so far. My only complaint is that these new target frames turn slooowly, so we have about 8 seconds instead of 10 - but hey, we have the same problem at the Phoenix Rod&Gun, so we kinda trained to this ))
As always, it was great to see the New Jersey juniors team shooting next to us, these kids never cease to amaze me I really hope some day they can make it to the DMW or one of the other big matches at the PRGC.

Re: Camp Perry 2021
Time is from the target full face, so you should have 12 seconds actually!

Re: Camp Perry 2021
The registration process was, to say the least, tedious. It seemed to me, and several others in subsequent discussion, that all of the questions asked were a repeat of what was already declared in the online registration process - unnecessary duplication - IMHO.
I went back to the CMP room the next morning to see whether I could "mix-up" my Relays - no, the 2700 is fixed and that locks in most of the other matches.
This is my first opportunity to visit Perry, so I am discovering all manner of little details that make a significant difference - interesting! Every person that I have spoken to is positive and enthusiastic - excellent! It is busy!
Whilst others are complaining about the Vendors Row - I love it - got to meet several individuals in person whom I have been dealing with via phone or email over the past couple of years - very valuable.
Big thank you to Champions Choice for bringing so much stock. My spotting scope got ruined in the heavy rain during Sunday's 45AGG at Canton - even better replacement now in place on my "hybrid" gun box - Yay!

Well, that was the opposite of what I've observed, some of those rapid fire strings were really fast.
Re: Camp Perry 2021
I also had a positive experience today. Due to work constraints I could only shoot two days, 22eic and Trophy Matches on Saturday. Registration process for me was simple and quick (by this point most people were already registered). Line was very well run. Targets did turn slow but they did for everyone so not a big deal (I have been to a range where some points turned at different speed). I had a ton of fun and am looking foreword to Saturday.

Is the 7:30 start time for first relay later than it was under the NRA? I noticed that there was no morning colors ceremony today before the safety briefing so I assume that happened sometime before I started walking towards the range.
Hearing the cannon fire (and the subsequent car alarms) was long a memorable part of shooting first relay at Perry.

Re: Camp Perry 2021
Thanks to all of you relating their Perry experiences! I lived on Catawba, worked at Uniroyal (next to Perry) and shot there a good many years. A LOT of memories. The Nationals were preceded by Regionals at Bristol IN, and Canton-McKinley. What a great time of year. The common greeting among shooters starting some time in May was"ya goin ta Perry"?

Conditions this morning were similar to yesterday's but a little drier, windier and cloudier. Now the clouds have blown away and second relay is shooting in the sunshine. There's rain in the forecast for later today, probably after the revolver match.

Colors and cannon are apparently happening at 7:00 am sharp. I must keep missing it by a minute or two.Orpanaut wrote:Is the 7:30 start time for first relay later than it was under the NRA? Although Caspian isn't here this year, there is a new vendor called something like "U.S. Ordnance" and they have scores of slides and miscellaneous parts from Colt. No frames, though.

Re: Camp Perry 2021
Mayfly numbers are way down this year. I think the swarms must have peaked earlier.
Right now I'm sitting under a big maple tree at the southern end of Camp Perry by the dozen or so old huts that are still standing. There's a blue sky full of puffy clouds, wind rustling through the leaves, birds singing, and the distant crackle of gunfire from the ranges. It's very relaxing.

2021 National Matches
Thanks to all who are at Perry and have posted their observations. It has been many years since I have been there. I miss the people and the cease fire due to boats downrange (always wondered why boaters were not smarter). I spent many hours at Champion Shooters and Champion Choice huts at the end of the day. Much better than shopping on-line. I miss "Going Home". Regards, Joe

Re: Camp Perry 2021
It's a ".mov" file. I opened it in Safari and in Chrome, using my Mac mini.
I also opened it just now for testing using my iPhone.
What video formats can your device play?
Go to www.sgrid.com/2021 and you should get a list of the files there. One will be "salyer-camp-perry.mov". Click on it - does it complain about the video format? It's high resolution, maybe that's the problem?

There's a free app for Android called VLC that is kind of a standard on PCs and some other platforms. If you download the mov file it will play it.
