Camp Perry 2021
First topic message reminder :
This is a thread to share the Canp Perry experience with those who cannot attend this year.
For me, 2021 is both a return after missing both 2019 and 2020 and the beginning of a new normal with the NRA having left for Camp Atterbury and the CMP running the whole show. It's good to be back.
The first surprising thing about Perry 2021, at least for me, is the number of shooters here. I thought that attendance would be down maybe a third as some shooters opted to go to the NRA Nationals instead. But the RV park is full and there are no lodging vacancies, even in the barracks.
This leads to the second surprise... the long wait to check in with the CMP. It's the same setup in the Arcade as in previous years, but with more matches to process the system seems to have bogged down some. I got in line mid-afternoon yesterday (probably the worst possible time) and didn't finish until two hours later. Next year, I will have to arrive earlier so I can finish before the practice range closes.

For video playback, don't buy anything. Yes, the VLC app (actually, it is "Open Source" is as good as it gets, and will play just about any video. Here's more information than you probably want to read:
https://www.lifewire.com/what-is-an-mov-file-2622779
Jim - if I get some free time, I will convert it to something other than .mov - Dave sent me the file, and it opened on my iPhone, it opened on my Mac mini, so I posted it to my server. Maybe someone with some free time can download the video, convert it to whatever format your computer uses, and re-post.

I converted the file to the mkv format. Should play on either Windows or Mac.

Just happy to be here!
For me returning to Perry and competitive shooting in general is just freakin' awesome! I have been away from this sport since 2013 and really missed the people, the challenges and the excitement of participating in an event I love on a historic range! Yes there are fewer vendors than I remember, but 20covid was a miserable year for everyone and I am sad for those that have been impacted more directly than myself.
Yes there are fewer vendors than I recall and many are absent the year. From a business perspective how does one justify the expense after a less than productive year to attend an event with little or no inventory? Zero could not even fill my order and honestly I am not sure how I would have reacted if they showed up here with inventory to sell but had not filled my order? Caspian was behind on work just this spring.
Having the CMP actually invest the time, money and energy to continue to support our sport is refreshing and welcomed!! Give them time to work out the kinks, they seem quite open to constructive input and helping make this the experience it once was. Or quite possibly taking our sport to a height not seen in a long time?
Rome was not built in a day
I am a bit of in introvert and observer by nature, and what I am observing are smiles and handshakes among the friendliest group of people I have had the privilege of being surrounded with!
Its Friday and my last day here 100% chance of rain or storms but I will enjoy every minute of it! Second relay, firing point 369 stop by and say hey! RV site 30 pulling out tomorrow AM and headed back to Wisconsin.
Keep them in the black and have a great day!!

Re: Camp Perry 2021
The weather for first relay was cool and drizzly but calm. Although there was enough rain to make everything wet, we didn't have the sort of soaking rain and ankle-deep puddles we had a few years ago.

Re: Camp Perry 2021
Second relay wether was very nice! Grey skies, very little wind and comfortable temps. Just some drizzle during slow fire and some drops during the last rapid fire.
Seems I recall always thinking first relay had the weather advantage.
Not so on this given day. Skies getting darker and wind picking up a little.
EIC and team matches to go yet today.

The absence of classifications is a real "Dropped Ball". Why do we have CMP Class Cards? This has to be fixed.

Re: Camp Perry 2021
Well there were four classifications. Military metallic sights, civilian metallic sights, military any sight and civilian any sight.
And then there may have been a revolver class military and civilian? Yes this is disappointing to not be able to compete with shooters of similar skill level as yourself. To have 800+ people competing for those four spots is not the way to grow the sport. I am certain this is a work in progress. Keep voicing concerns as the CMP seems very open to the feedback!

Re: Camp Perry 2021
Another difference is that the CMP treats each third of the 2700 as a single match, so there are no more awards for, say, .22 timed fire or the .45 national match course. Combine that with the lack of skill-based classifications and the odds of leaving Perry with some smidgen of glory are greatly reduced.

Re: Camp Perry 2021
A big part of the NRA Perry Experience was that there were enough shooters for really nice classification awards. Those of us who will never be high masters or able to put together a high master team could enjoy the competition for bragging rights if nothing else. Now unless you are working on distinguished, they are just expensive matches in poor conditions on uncovered firing points.
I fear it won’t be very long until attendance drops way off. This has been another poor weather year.

Re: Camp Perry 2021
We were mislead to believe the class system would be in place. From the post on Facebook:
These same terms apply to the class awards as well. For example:
The Expert Class shooter that wins the Expert class at all three of the above mentioned matches would be the “Expert Class Triple Crown Winner”.
The Expert Class shooter that has the high aggregate from those same matches (but didn’t win the Expert Class in all three) is the “High Expert Class Aggregate Winner”, and so on with the other Classes.
Here is an example of how a shooter can be the high aggregate winner in their class, but not the Triple Crown Winner.
Shooter A shoots 825, 824, 825. With that, they have won two of the 900s but not all three.
Shooter B shoots 824, 825, 824. With this, Shooter A is the High Aggregate winner, but not the
Triple Crown Winner.
If an aggregate award is mentioned, unless otherwise stated, that aggregate is taken from the three matches stated above.

Today's weather: wet. It still isn't a full deluge but we are getting more rain than we had yesterday. The showers should taper off by the afternoon so at least the Glock shooters won't be soaked... above the knees.

Remember, the Triple Crown Awards are distinctly separate from CMP awards.

With a lot of us having different CMP classifications than NRA classifications, I think that will be a nightmare.james r chapman wrote:Remember, the Triple Crown Awards are distinctly separate from CMP awards.

God bless the range personnel who are tromping around in the muck to make these matches happen. The CMP seems to have two thirds of the staff that the NRA had and they are the ones sorting out the confusion that comes with these new routines.

By the way, it looks like we are back to replacing full targets rather than stapling repair centers for the President's 100.

They may feel conditions are terrible enough today or too few of the weekend shooters know to bring a stapler, that they are just using fresh targets
