crimp - Question about tight crimp Empty Question about tight crimp

Post by Uppsala45acp Tue May 24, 2022 4:21 am

Hi. I crimp my .452 lead swc to .471.
If i use a tighter crimp there will be markings on the bullet when i use a bullet puller and checking them for marks.
Now i see some is using a way more tight crimp with great results.
Does´nt damage/markings on the bullet affect the accuracy in a bad way? Or is it too small markings to make a difference
Thanks!

I believe the consensus is you don't want to swage the base, which is what actually seals the bore. But the crimp markings don't really matter. FYI I crimp lead at 0.464-0.465.

I run from .465 to my current.. 463 and have no issues with accuracy. The crimp area on the bullet probably has no more ill affect than lube grooves.

Crimps make an impression of nearly uniform depth around the circumference of the bullet. As long as it is uniform, the net effect of crimping lead should be to enhance accuracy. If it isn't you may look at other aspects of the reloading process or pistol.

Just thinking out loud - wondering if the .463-.465" taper crimp, with more taper of the bullet shoulder, helps the bullet easily engage the throat with less upset than a square shouldered .469-.470" taper crimp?
