Solo 1000 .45 acp loads
Is any one using Solo 1000 in thier .45 loads and would you like to share some starting loads?
I've been out of shooting for a while and my old computer gave out and I lost all my load info.
Since I have it in stock I would like to use it but can't remember my powder charges.
Should have kept a paper log, I would still have my info.

My burn rate chart shows Solo 1000 to have about the same burn rate as Bullseye, W231 and Titegroup. Someone will be along shortly with some load data.

I have been told by a very well known gunsmith that Solo 1000, like Titegroup will prematurely erode your barrel.

Hmmm I've burnt alot of this powder when I was shooting regulary and have seen no signs of errosion though I don't have access to a bore scope or microscope to see if there is any damage.Steve B wrote:I have been told by a very well known gunsmith that Solo 1000, like Titegroup will prematurely erode your barrel.
Thanks for the info Steve.

Titegroup leaves scorch marks on my brass. Does Solo 1000 do the same thing?

I haven't seen that with my brass after shooting loads with Solo 1000.
I like it because it has a lighter recoil pulse. You don't get the sharp rap in the web of your hand like you do with faster burning powders.

For whatever it is worth....
I tried Solo 1000. It didn't do anything for me that CLAYS or VVN310 didn't, so I stopped using it before I heard similar stories of barrel damage.

The thing that VVN310 does for me, is take a big bite right out of my bank account. For 45 I am sticking with Bullseye. I love the way N340 performs in my 9mm loads, and I have experimented a little to find something cheaper, but so far, no luck. I like Clays a lot but we have a lot of trouble out here with huge temperature swings at outdoor matches, where it can start off in the high thirties in the morning, and be 70 when we finish 45 in the afternoon. The temperature sensitive nature of Clays, along with it not metering very well, made me abandon it.

VVN310 is pricey, so I use CLAYS when I can't find it at a good price. You are correct about CLAYS' heat sensitivity and temperamental metering. Where I live in California; our temperature swings can be from the 50's to the 100's, but I get around that issue by keeping all of my range ammunition in a cooler. For the metering problem....I've been known to weigh my match loads.

Re: Solo 1000 .45 acp loads
I dug out my printed posts from some time ago. Phil McFall said his most accurate load with a 200 gn. LSWC was 4.1 gns of Solo 1000. That load was good for 2" at 50 yards in his gun. He said that 3.8 gns. was giving him vertical stringing.
Neil of NSK thought that 4.2gn. would be ideal and should be under 2".
Neil also said that to duplicate the Federal Match ammo that 4.3 gns. with a jacketed 185 should be at 790 fps.
I have not used these loads and am repeating what was published 5-6 years ago. The loads seem to be in line with my experience though I have not used them.

Thanks Kermit, That's what I was looking for , a starting point. I have a good supply of Solo and lost my load data with a computer failure. I haven't done any shooting for at least 4 years due to opperating my own business and was on the road alot.

Re: Solo 1000 .45 acp loads
I read the responses and no one ever replied with what you were asking. I printed a hard copy of posts (from the old forum) that I thought were of interest to me and cataloged them. It took me about 3 minutes to find what you asked.
I also remember that Ed Masaki was a big fan of Solo 1000 powder in the .45 ACP. I did not find his load but I probably have it somewhere. It was the reason I first bought a can of Solo 1000 but I have not got around to loading it in a .45 ACP. I have used it in a .38 Special for DR loads but I found better powders for that purpose.

Re: Solo 1000 .45 acp loads
Solo 1000 is a single base large flake powder that does not burn hot like TiteGroup (TG must have a lot of NG in it to burn so hot), so I can't see it causing any barrel wear.
It is a very good .45 Auto powder and, like Bullseye, seems to be well behaved (no sudden pressure spikes).
I only shoot 200gn L-SWCs and find that 4.1-5.1gn works well with a COL slightly greater than 1.240".
N310, Clays, and TiteGroup have all shown a propensity for pressure spikes (occasional rounds that have more snap and throw the case further and land outside the group) with even weighed charges from my ChargeMaster, so I don't really like them. For .45 Auto, my two favorite powders (for accuracy) are 231/HP38 and AA2. Bullseye has been the #1 powder for .45Auto target loads, but I haven't gotten the great results others have.
If I was to load a VV powder for .45 Auto, I would try N320--reportedly very similar to 231/HP38.

noylj, what are your 231/HP38 and AA2 loads? What bullet are you using ? I also have a supply of 231 and would like to work up some loads for it also.

Re: Solo 1000 .45 acp loads
I have used WW231 and used 10%( by weight) more than Bullseye. So for a 4.0 grains of Bullseye load I used 4.4 grains of WW231. Also WW231 is 10% denser than Bulleye so a volumetric dispenser that throws 4.0 BE charge will throw 4.4 grains of WW231 without adjustment.
I think you will find most people use between 4.4 and 4.6 of WW231 with a 200 grain SWC.

200gn H&G #68 L-SWC:
I get great results with any where from 4.0-5.4gn of 231/HP38. That is why I like it so much. Anywhere in that range, I get 2" or less at 50 yards. For time-after-time repeatability, 4.7-4.8gn has been my load.
AA2 does best in my guns at 4.7-4.9gn.
Clays, which I don't like, does well for me at 3.7-4.1gn.
N310, which I don't like, does well for me at 3.6-3.7gn (and at 4.5-4.6gn).
Red Dot does well at 3.9-4.4gn, with 4.1gn being my sweet-spot.
Bullseye has been very indifferent in my guns, with 4.1gn being about the best.

Re: Solo 1000 .45 acp loads
Thanks Kermit and noylj for the info. So far I've setteled on 4.5gr of Solo 1000 under a 200gr H&G 130 that I cast and 4.6-4.7 of Solo 1000 under a 185gr Zero HPWC. I have to seat the 185 as deep as possible and crimp to .469 to get it to feed consistently. My pistol a Springfield Armory Custom shop hard ball gun built by Les Bare when he worked for them perfers the short button nose bullet or round nose.
