pistol scorebook? Empty pistol scorebook?

Post by Casey101 1/18/2014, 3:51 pm

Reading over the AMU Pistol Guide there are references in there to using a scorebook

Do you use one?
If so where did you get it?
Are there different ones?

I've done a search on google and did not turn up much.

Thanks,

John

I always record my scores.  I just use a blank pocket size notebook that is wire bound and fits in my shirt pocket.  Keep in my gun box.

I take a picture of my scorecard and enter them in a spreadsheet when I get home.

This is different than the one I used to get from Gil Hebard, but looks like it serves the same purpose.

I also track scores by snapping a pic of my scorecards. The scores get entered into Excel.

I keep a note book of training time. I note the date, location, conditions, drills, learnings, gun, ammo, etc.

Being a cheap charlie I used the grid found at http://www.guntalk-online.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2177 (which is in the AMU book), copied it to Microsoft Paint, cleared the Team Match section, then pasted the result three times into Microsoft Word and adjusted the format size. That way a single page would be printed with three grids.

Print, punch holes and place in a binder/notebook.

This is what my score card looks like. It's in Excel so it adds for you. I make a tab (sheet) for each shoot. Just a minimalist card. No other information except scores. Now that I have a .45, I will have to add a section for caliber.

Bullseye10X,
I like the looks of your scoring record. Color works well.
I track my league's stats like this so I have all the formulas.

Larry,

The only problem I encountered is that Excel won't add a "10X" entry (because of the letter X). I am going to have to change that so you have to put "10" in the box and then keep track of the "X" shots separately on the form.

Try the spreadsheet I linked in my post above.  You enter X's & M's and the formulas in the spreadsheet accounts for them correctly.

It is organized just like the matches and does some analytics

Using dronning's (thanks again!) formulas and some of his ideas, I have re-created my Excel scorecard.  You can enter just about any parameter you want.  This is a GREAT records keeping system.

FEATURES...

Drop-down box for Match lets you choose from .22, Centerfire, or Service Pistol
Drop-down box for Caliber lets you choose from .22LR, .32 S&W Long, .38 Special, .38 Super, .380 ACP, 9 mm, and .45 ACP.
Drop-down box for Sights lets you choose between Open Sights or Red-Dot Sight.

The sheet counts X's as "10"
Will compute your score for each round as well as the number of X's for that round.
Will compute your total score as well as total number of X's.
Will compute your average for three rounds.
Will compute your percentage (out of 900) for all three rounds, and display the NRA Classification of  MM, SS, E, HM and, M.

Text space for your Name, Date, Time, Match Type, Location, Gun & Optic, Ammo Load, Weather, and two Notes fields.

Send me (or post) your E-Mail and I will send it to you if you want.

Congratulations on the score record system and on shooting a personal best. Keep shooting against yourself, expect tens and X's and you will go far!

Bullseye10X,
If you would rather just host the entire file here, just hit the "post reply" button and attach the entire file as an attachment. That way everybody can access it in perpetuity.

I use a score book for tracking scores for matches.  I have about 18 years worth now. Scores and averages are a good means to track progress.

However I use the diary for tracking shots when training in order to determine what I need to do to make progress. .  For example, for slow fire training I track each shot score in sequence to get the data to see if there are any patterns or issues to address. (For example, is the first shot evenly distributed over the range of shot values, or is it consistently a X or 9.  Do the 9's come at the end of the string or the beginning, etc.?  For sustained fire, I make notes on how I called the shots in sequence and then what the results are by string.)  Takes a little time but this will provide data for improvement that a score book does not.)
