38 Special Factory 158gr Lead Semi-Wadcutter or Lead Round Nose For Distinguished Revolver
Looking to start on Distinguished Revolver ( DR ) and not seeking to reload initially due to time/distance to Nationals.
Therefore I need to pick up some factory ammunition to take to Perry. Eventually I'll reload, but I need an interim/short term solution.
Here's what I've been able to find below. Happy to buy a box of each and see what works best, but hoping to narrow the field a little before I swipe my credit card.
Let me know if there are any viable/better options, or if I'm on the path. Zero experience with 38 wheel guns.
Thanks as always,
Derek

Some people on this board have had slightly better luck with LRN.

In my old 14-3 I had really good luck with magtech 158 Lrn @50. 158lrn American eagle,Remington umc, and regular green box Remington were good as well at 50.
If you feel the recoil is too much at 25 look at the fps on the box

Yep;
Federal/American Eagle 158gr LRN is what I used to go distinguished.
I found LRN to be more accurate then SWC.
YMMV

IN YOUR GUN ROUND NOSE SHOULD BE MORE ACCURATE. I HAVE FOUND THE REMINGTON TO BE THE MOST ACCURATE (VIA RANSOM REST). JP

Round nose. I have a S&W M14-3 and I tried factory or commercial bullets and semi wadcutters never worked. Not at 50 yards. Even my own cast semi wadcutters wouldn't work. Switched to round nose and patterns turned to groups. Just my experience.

My 14-2 love the Remington target.. even the SWC but it has an 11 degree throat in it so that may have an affect..

no 11 is not factory if memory serves .. I have an old set of throat reamers that I got from Brownells years ago for revolvers.. they still sell the kit and pieces.

Sometimes bringing them back to factory specs is harder then it should be. This 14-8 is a "Classic" case in point. Throated, reamed, gutted (threw away cast ignition parts) and put on a nice set of grips. It likes Rem or Federal 158gr LRN and shoots nice. My point is after all the work that was done it is still spec. When I sell it the buyer will only know he got a great shooting revolver. Shooting it for Reeves and CF now so perfectly legal for me no matter how you read the regs.

Another vote for Federal LRN for 50 yards here. I use 3.3 WST and Zero 158 SWC for the short line. S&W 14-3 and 14-1.

My 14 like Rem UMC LRN on the long line. It likes Rem and Federal LRN fine on the short line

Picked up some Remington Target 158gr LRN, sounds like that should be a winner, if not, I'll get something else.

Went out and was able to Ransom Rest (thanks to the benevolence/patience of a friend and league Bullseye shooter) and some continued help from our local friendly forum Gunsmith (Jon) to troubleshoot.
My K-38 (Pre Model 14) results in order from best to worst for my wheel gun.
1) Federal American Eagle 158gr LRN
2) Remington Target 158 gr LRN
3) Winchester Super-X 158 gr LSWC
The Federal was significantly better than Remington. The Winchester LSWC was terrible. Shotgun pattern.
I've got an order for Magtech 158gr Lead Round Nose (LRN) and Federal LE 158gr LSWC, and I'll see how that looks in the Ransom.
If I can find some Zero I'll test that as well, but I'll probably not be ordering any soon unless I need bullets.
