Process - Shot process problem with a new gun in Slow Fire Empty Shot process problem with a new gun in Slow Fire

Post by Oleg G 6/18/2017, 4:40 pm

Folks,

I need an advice. My shot process for the first Slow Fire relay includes dry firing shots until I know that all is as it should be and I am ready to release live shots. With my Ruger 22/45 this was easy - I don't load at first, fire as many dry fire shots as I need to get settled, then load and proceed to fire the string.
I just got a Model 41. (Happy Father's Day! Smile)Great gun but it is not safe to dry fire. So now I am at a loss:
1. How do I go about safely firing my needed dry fire shots with this gun? Or,
2. How do I alter my shot process to account for this issue?

Please help.

Dry fire a different pistol. Or, have a mag loaded with snap caps.

Brilliant and simple! Thanks, Len. I'll try both approaches to decide, which is better for me.

Larry's Guns offers chamber plugs which I used to dry fire with my S&W 41 or Sig Trailside:

Cut a piece if magnetic business card to protect the chamber but not be engaged by the extractor, or use a chamber plug.

I use drywall anchors, white ones the same size as a .22 LR. I snip the side off so the extractor can't grab and eject it when I cock the gun. Works for quite a bit of DF practice. I also put the anchor in when I'm done shooting and pull the trigger so the pistol isn't always cocked when it's stored.

I cut a thin strip from a magnetic advertisement that came in the (junk) mail.  It holds the bolt back enough to ensure no firing pin contact but still allows the pistol to fire.  Since it's magnetic it stays in place when cycling the bolt and there's nothing (plug) to remove from the chamber when your ready to live fire.

Congratulations on the 41! Any of those methods mention work for the 41. Find the right ammo for it and shoot it has always been my solution with that gun. Mid 280's and occasional 290's have been the result. Take good care of it and ask questions if function becomes an issue.

I'm using a M41 myself.  I have used snap caps and the the chamber plugs in the 41. Both work great. CCI SV and Eley Club run 100% in mine. I've never had a refire yet.

Thanks to all. I bought dry fire plugs from Larry's Guns and those seem to do the trick - easy to use. I am running CCI SV in mine. Works fine - reliable and accurate.
