S W Long - .32 S&W short in a .32 S&W long? Empty .32 S&W short in a .32 S&W long?

Post by Mike38 4/16/2018, 2:07 pm

Has anyone tried and were successful at shooting a .32 S&W short round in a semi automatic pistol chambered for .32 S&W long wadcutter? I have this hair brained idea to try loading the .32 Hornady 60gr XTP bullet in a short case and trying it. The OAL of a .32 S&W short with RN bullet is .920. The OAL of a .32 S&W long wadcutter is .920. Think it will work?

What dronning said. Don't do it unless you have real good disability insurance and want to retire early.

Well, you’re on your own for data. So, before I’d go off on that tangent I’d seriously consider getting a S&W K 32 or a Thompson-center Barrel in 32 SW and trying it out in that. If that goes BOOM you haven’t destroyed a $2000 Target Pistol. It looks like maybe 1.5 -2.0 gr. You’d also need to load up 10 or so dummies to see if they’ll feed.

Good luck

Well, I kind of like my fingers, so maybe I'll pass. I figured that being the S&W long's parent case is the S&W short, it may just work. What exactly would be the cause of a Boom? Too much leade?

Greetings,

I tried it once.

The resultant groups were not acceptable.

They held perhaps the nine ring at 50 yards.

Cheers,

Hello,

My experience with .32 accuracy in revolvers....

.32 shorts fired in a long's chamber = poor accuracy
.32 longs fired in a magnum's chamber = poor accuracy

My guess would be the too long of a leade caused the suffering of accuracy. Thank you for the reply.

38 special wadcutters and 9mm can have the same OAL too. Laughing But the rimless rounds keep falling too deep in the cylinder...
