Camp Perry 2018 Report
First topic message reminder :
Here are some impressions of the National Matches so far:
The weather is warm, dry and very sunny with a light breeze. I'd prefer to have things a little cloudier but this is about as good as it gets here.
Match administration is a bit... confused. Registration and squadding are not running as smoothly as in previous years. The range personnel are still excellent.
Only ranges 2 and 4 are running matches. Range 1 was a combination match/practice range yesterday but today it's back to practice only. I heard that there are about 500 shooters here.
Most of the usual suspects are at Commercial Row with the notable exceptions of Larry's Guns and Champion Shooters Supply.
The mayflies are out in force today and I had dozens land on me as I was walking from the ready line to the parking area.

Re: Camp Perry 2018 Report
I see that only 5 high masters shot their class.
Dang! I picked the wrong Perry to skip!!!!!!!
There must be more to this little tale of woe than I have heard so far.
Light winds? I read the entire the roster looking for my friends from the past and found very few.
Came across the names of National Champions and have a hard time believing the scores.
Light winds, no rain!
Light winds as in no pistol boxes got blown over or actually light winds as in under 5MPH?
I need to get ready for next year!

2700 shooters scores by classification and performance of class
Classification number of shooters number that shot their class number that shot above class
High Master 52 5 NA
Master 119 9 0
Expert 192 101 2 both military
Sharpshooter 88 46 13
I have not done a deep analysis on this but my observation by looking at the scores of the HM's over the years is the scores are never very high and not very far above the 2619. Perry scores always seem to be lower. It seems to me something about Camp Perry attributes to lower scores even in good weather. Could it be the drastic difference of the range itself standing in the middle of an open field?
I would like to see it be possible for people to have the best environment to shoot at their top level so we can see some really good scores and a great competition.

Match Pressure IMHO.
BUT, canton scores just the week before tend to be much better.
Maybe it is poor range setup??????

I might agree if it was match pressure if we saw the same thing happen at the Olympics which could be the ultimate match pressure.

canton isn't the same weather as perry. Just enough wind at perry to mess with you.

I don't think winds were ever hard enough to blow over a box. I never strapped my box to the table and I never used my door clamp. One day (22 day I think, but I shot 22 across the course so they blend together now) the wind was a little tricky. It never blew hard, but it was constantly changing. I can't blame the wind for more than a point or two here and there. My bad shots were all my own.

You got me curious so I pulled up the past results. Depending on how you look at it, scores this year were not very far from "normal". I have a spreadsheet to track scores from 2002 on.
The overall winning score was lower but each of the individual matches were pretty close to normal:
Match Winner '18 Average '02-'18
2700 2625-132x 2639-126x
22 884-41x 888-48x
CF 876-49x 881-41x
45 881-44x 881-40x
I also pulled out the number of people who shot 2600 and above. 2003 had the most at 30 (4%). 2016 had none. The average number of 2600 scores is 2.2% of shooters. This year 13 out of 532 shooters shot 2600 or 2.4%.

Where did you find historical results?

I've saved the online results since I started shooting in 2002. I have also collected a lot of historical results for past years. You can see everything I have at the link below. I'll add 2018 this weekend (Google Drive is blocked at work).

I intend to contact the NRA to see if I can get copies of more old results bulletins, but I've been too busy the last couple of years to investigate it. If anyone wants to take on the challenge that would be greatly appreciated.
Everything I have has come from our fellow shooters. I believe I have acknowledged everyone who provided copies of old results bulletins. Special thanks to Carlos Cancio. I said it would be too much trouble to scan in old bulletins, so he did it for a lot of them. After seeing what he did, I was inspired and scanned in several more.

Re: Camp Perry 2018 Report
My overall Perry results exceeded my results at Canton. I think that Canton helped me to relax with the conditions we saw at Perry.
Does anyone train specifically for the conditions at Perry? I know that some of the other Cavalier shooters and I began practicing on the open PPC range at the end of June to start getting used to the effect of the sun behind us and on us while shooting. There's still not much wind, but it was good practice for dealing with the glare on the back of the 1" ultradot (even with the hood in place).

Re: Camp Perry 2018 Report
You can stack up two or more hoods on an ultra-dot.
I do that in the rain.
If I recall correctly, not a sure thing these days, the sun rises directly from the right and sets to the left. Not in front or behind the shooting line. High noon does put the sun a little south (behind the shooting line) of straight up due to the northern latitude.

Not on the one inch it just has the rubber hood for the shooter side. On the Ultradot 2, I can use more than one though.
At Perry the 1pm relay got the most sun from behind. That might be due to daylight savings time. I didn't notice much of a difference in the second relay and first relay, as you noted, had the sun rising from the right.

On my old 30mm 4 dot 4-8-12-16moa scopes the shade tubes will screw into both ends. I have used 4 total tubes, 2 front and 2 back for shooting in the rain.
Did not know the 1" scopes were different.

Re: Camp Perry 2018 Report
I think even the 30mm Ultradot1 will only accept the rubber cup shade on the eyepiece end. Jerry Keefer made up a coned shade for me to test because I was distracted by the 30mm view. It goes from 3/4 inch to attach to the 30mm threads on either front or back of the Matchdot. It works pretty well for me on the 22.

Re: Camp Perry 2018 Report
The ultra dot scopes I bought from Larry 20 years ago have the same threads front and back.
The rubber ring things are stored in a drawer somewhere. They make lousy shade and have to be removed to screw the metal tube shade on the back. I like the ultra-dot so much that I have put them on several non target guns. All these years they still work great.

Maybe, I am wrong and missed something. Two of my dots date back to 1998-1999. Thanks

Re: Camp Perry 2018 Report
I know the matchdot II only has one for the front. I bought one of Doug Halls shades for the rear. Screws right in and worked perfectly.
The 1" ultradot does have threads in the rear housing. I don't yet know of any making a rear shade for it.

Does Doug Halls still make the Matchdot II shades? My Matchdot II has different threads front and rear.
Where can he be contacted, please.
Thanks,

Re: Camp Perry 2018 Report
Greetings,
I was very pleased to see the 1979 Results posted.
This was the year I "made out well" at Camp Perry.
Won the Collegiate Championship with a 2511X60!
Also placed in the 22NMC, 22TF, and CFNMC matches. With Iron Sights, no less, and shooting the .45ACP. I had not yet discovered the 32 yet.
It was so good to see the names of all the great shooters I had the chance to meet 40 years ago.
With sincere thanks,
Dave
