Is My .45 barrel Done?
I purchased a used wad gun some 1500 rounds ago. I have no idea if the barrel was the first or not but the frame and slide shipped from Caspian in 1992.I am fairly new to the pistol game but have over 20 years of Long Range competition behind me. I know when a rifle barrel is done. Pistol is not so straight forward. The pistol has stopped grouping. My Starline brass is on it's 8th firing and case length is around .892". It used to shoot fairly well from the bench (1.5" vertical @ 50 yds.) but no more. Is it a brass or barrel issue? The rifling corners are definitely rounded but still there.
My loads have needed several 10nths additional powder to match the velocity others are getting:
4.8gr. WST for 675 fps as opposed to 4.2
5.0gr. 231 for 740 fps as opposed to 4.6
Thanks for any and all input!
Mike

Scrub it out with Chore Boy copper strands wrapped around your brush. Use a power drill. Soak in kroil etc. It takes a lot to shoot out a .45 bbl.
Check for mechanical issues too! Lugs, upper/lower. Slide stop worn out?

some amsoil cleaner would do the trick. In all honesty i doubt its shot out.Make sure the chamber is clean the crown isn't damaged, make sure its still locking up well.james r chapman wrote:Scrub it out with Chore Boy copper strands wrapped around your brush. Re: Is My .45 barrel Done?
I've got over 28,000 rounds in the barrel of my .45 Clark Heavy Slide and it still shoots better than I can hold it. My .38 Clark started opening up at around 10,000 rounds but it was not the barrel, it needed a new bushing. At 17,000 rounds it still is grouping at an inch and half at 50 yards.
I would be more inclined to look at the bushing and lock-up, rather than the barrel as your culprit.

Well, slide stop was pretty far out of round - measure from .196" - .200" depending. Had a .200" on hand so that it in. Bushing feels very snug and seems to be locking up fine. That leaves me or the ammo. I am betting the ammo is good. Oh well, my penchant for blaming everything but myself lives on!
