Need help selecting 45 ACP bullet
I've been reloading 9mm and .38spl for a while now. I've qualified Sharpshooter Bar9 in the NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program for Conventional Bullseye Pistol. I recently moved and joined a club that hosts a few bullseye matches. I would like to participate, so I just purchased a 1911 in 45ACP (Springfield Ranger Officer). I'm now in the mode of researching and purchasing components, dies, etc.
I've had really good luck with 135gr X-Treme bullets for my 9mm. I've had good luck with Missouri bullets 158gr SWC for my .38spl with the Hi-Tek coating.
I've read the sticky on pet loads multiple times over. It looks like Zero and Nosler 185gr JHP's are great, but I don't know if I want/need to spend that kind of cash just yet.
Between X-Treme and Missouri, is there a bullet that really stands out as the hands-down go-to bullet? (They seem to be in my price range). 185gr? 200gr? RN? Button? SWC? Flat Base? Beveled base?
There's also Berry's, but I didn't have luck with them in 9mm so I've kind of written them off (may I shouldn't?).

The Zero 185 gr. lead swc hollow point are a go to choice for many. I’ve shot thousands.

185 SWC bulls eye bullet your best option on your list.(missouri)
shoot that for a while then look at zero 185 swedged (i use this at 50 yards only)
i cast my own 160swc and 180swc for 25 yards and in(50 foot)
in other sports i use Hi tek coated but not Bulls eye.

Excellent feedback! Thanks guys. I'll deviate from my list and get some Zero lead swc.
Any recommended powders? On hand I have HP38, Bullseye, N320, N340, HS6, Power Pistol, Clay's, Universal.

Bullseye. Depending on your recoil and mainspring somewhere between 3.6 and 4.6 gr. It depends on what works best in your pistol. I use 4.2 with the 200gr and the 185's. Might not be the best for you but it is a good place to start.

Re: Need help selecting 45 ACP bullet
In my wad gun I like Bayou bullets 185 grain swc. They are more than accurate enough for the 25 yard line (I don't get to shoot at 50 yards that often). I have used 3.7 grains of bulleye and 4.7 grains of 231. I crimp them at .464-.465. As often said your results may vary and every gun is different. I have also shot magnus 185 grain swc (the little short ones) and they work well too.

Also - I love the quote in the signature. Which is why I'm asking for help on a load so I can spend time on fundamentals and not trying to re-invent the wheel with load development.

For brass you just can't hardly beat Starline.

I'm not seeing a LSWCHP on Magnus's website. Is this something they have that they don't advertise?LenV wrote:
Magnus 185gr LSWCHP with lighter load. Not much difference to chose from. I suppose I could have cranked it left a couple of clicks.

They are there, but you have to look under swaged lead.
