Re: New Winchester (Hodgon) powder 244
I've just started loading Win 244 in 9mm and so far it looks extremely promising. It's a fast powder with charge weights somewhere between Titegroup and Win 231, at least in 9mm.
So far I have loaded Win 244 under the Hornady 125 gr HAP and the Rocky Mountain Reloading 124 gr TCFP FMJ bullet and both loads shot very well at 25 yards.

Is the "WinClean" name deserved? Any cleaner than other powders?
I've seen people shoot the new "clean" factory ammo at the range and it is surprising. Winchester SuperClean and Sellier Bellot Nontox. The spent brass cases look almost brand new inside. But a big part of that might be the lead-free primers, and I don't think we can purchase those as reloading components yet.

I don't know about the Winchester or S&B lead free primers being available, but Fiocchi lead free are available.

Re: New Winchester (Hodgon) powder 244
Handloader magazine did a propellant profile on 244. Mostly a first impressions article so not much real data. The loads useful in Bullseye calibers were:
9mm Luger..... 125 grain bullet...4.0 gr..... 1082fps
38 Special...... 150 grain bullet...4.0 gr..... 824fps
45ACP .......... 200 grain bullet...5.5 gr..... 892fps
All I have.... IMO, it seems to be a replacement for 231/HP38 which is apparently tough to make and meet “canister” standards...the loads here are a tad stiff for Bullseye. I have no data on how safe it is to drop these charges to get Bullseye velocities.

Re: New Winchester (Hodgon) powder 244
This new 244 powder is dense. Its occupies a volume of 0.0789cc per grain of powder. By comparison, 231 is 0.0931 and WST is 0.1205.
The smallest load my Lee measure could drop is 3.8gr at 0.30cc. I could not use it for 38 wadcutters or 9mm target loads.

Re: New Winchester (Hodgon) powder 244
Greetings,
Curious about this new powder.
What well known brands do the granules resemble?
Bullseye, Unique, Red Dot, VV N310?
Cheers,
Dave

Dave
According to the article, the granules more resemble Titegroup indicating that they are from that same process.
The bulk density os .800 g/cc and 95% must pass through a screen of .0469 inch. NG content is 37%.
Also according to the article shot to shot consistency was excellent.

Greetings Ashley,
Thanks for the data.
Now to decide if I should spend my "Free Time" testing yet another powder...
Cheers,
Dave

Re: New Winchester (Hodgon) powder 244
My 2 cents would be no... we have plenty of powders suitable for Bullseye pistol. What would be gained except data that might not be worth much?

Re: New Winchester (Hodgon) powder 244
Greetings,
Not all of us are that curious.
Me, I will test most anything reasonable to find out "what if".
Example, Hodgdon TiteWad is a very fast burning powder. I tested several loads in the 32 WadCutter and found one that shot exceptionally well at 50 yards with a Velocity of about 680 FPS. My FAS603 functions very well with that load.
True, it is hard to beat good 'ol Bullseye for most of our applications.
Cheers,
Dave
