Recommend a pistol scope.
Been thinking of a ransom rest but thinking I might try a pistol scope first to see what I can shoot at 50 yards with it. Up till now I've just used a red dot and sand bags.
Are there some "vintage" pistol scopes I should keep an eye out for on ebay. Maybe a 1-4x or something. My 1911's all have full rails so should be a simple proposition to put on for load testing. Would save the money and hassle of setting up a RR. I just can't shoot super consistent with a 45 off bags with just a dot.

Darius "Doc" Young used Leupold scopes on his pistols. They were modified with a large target turret for elevation.
I cannot recall if they were 1X or 2X.
However, if you are looking for a scope to do sandbag testing, I find that a 4X to 7X works well.
I align the cross hairs on two edges of a 1" target paster. Very easy to see if you are off the mark when you release the shot.
I like Burris and have several of them.

I have one of these 1.5-4 Burris. Excellent for bench shooting with a rest.

I like the Tasco Pro. They have a 30mm tube, super fine cross hairs with a one minute dot. Great for Bullseye loads. I wouldn't recommend for your 44mag. For the big guns I use my Leupold. They made several models. The bow scopes have no cross hairs just 3 different dots. Not really what you want. The target dot has the small dot. Mine is on the 41 on the left.

Found out my shooting buddy has a Tasco Pro Class 4x he's willing to sell. I'm gonna look through it but should probably do the job for not too much cash.

I've used a 6x rimfire rifle scope to accuracy test my 32. Worked pretty well. Would a scope like this hold together on a 45? I don't feel like I can shoot to the gun's capability from a rest, using a dot sight.

Pistol scope reply
I know of a shooter on Target Talk who uses a pistol scope to load test for the Pardini 32 ACP; I see no reason why, with a good rest, that this method would not give reliable if not great results. The shooter's handle is "Oldcaster." Cheers, dipnet
