Comparison, CCI SV vs. Eley "target".
First topic message reminder :
If I say why I'm asking the following, that would probably influence the replies, so I'll make this generic.
For those of you who have shot both in handguns, how would you compare CCI SV ammo, (purchased usually at a rather low cost), with Elay "target" ammo (available through Civilian Marksmanship Program) ?
The two considerations would be "precision" and "reliability", especially in very hot climates.
Both are 40 grain, CCI is rated at 1070 fps and Eley is rated at 1090 fps.

From the Wolff website
41, .22 Caliber - All Variable Recoil Springs
I'd try 6.5. If it's better try 7.

Re: Comparison, CCI SV vs. Eley "target".
Thanks!
Since the 1970's until recently, the gun worked fine with the original spring. S&W sent me a replacement. Maybe I'm just putting bandaids on, instead of fixing the real problem.
From what you've posted, I will put the new S&W OEM spring back in, and try the gun with my Eley ammo. With Eley, it's working fine right now, with the 6# spring. I'll put the old OEM spring in first, then try the new spring.
I'll also order some of the Geco ammo.

Only difference I see between your ammo and mine are the boxes. Bought the Eley at a local gun show about 4 or 5 yrs. ago and CCI SV from the CMP a couple of yrs. ago. Never have had any problems using either one in my 41's. I do use CCI SV most of the time and clean the pistols after each use.

Re: Comparison, CCI SV vs. Eley "target".
I just got off the phone with the CCI technician. He had me fill out an on-line forum, and they will send me a "call tag" so I can ship them either a sample of the ammo, (or maybe all of it). They will then figure out what is going wrong, and hopefully replace it.
Roland, my CCI always came in the black boxes before, but now it came in the blue box. No idea why, or if it matters.
I think I'll buy some more Eley 'target' in the meantime, but the CMP price seems to be quite a bit higher than from other sellers.

Re: Comparison, CCI SV vs. Eley "target".
I went through months of intensive data-driven analysis to see what worked better out of my .22 pistols. Ultimately I settled on RWS match. It gave me the most confidence... by a point or two over the runner up.
Once my skills caught up I found out I could shoot a box of 5$ CCI SV just as good as the 12-14 dollar stuff.
My advice, get whatever is cheaper and get more of it. Then, use the extra rounds in practice, training, and matches.

CMP Item Number: 4C22ELYSTD-5000 for about $35.00 a brick if you buy it by the 5000 round case, that beats $78.95 per brick.mikemyers wrote:I just got off the phone with the CCI technician. Re: Comparison, CCI SV vs. Eley "target".
Thank you very much for posting that. I called Eley tech support, and it seems to be the same as the "target" ammo, with the same coating, in bulk packaging. I just ordered a case.Roland Jones wrote:CMP Item Number: 4C22ELYSTD-5000 for about $35.00 a brick if you buy it by the 5000 round case, that beats $78.95 per brick. Pretty sure its the same Target Eley.......
I forgot to post this - I called Larry Nelson, and we discussed the ammo issues with CCI. Many other people have the same problem, their old CCI works well, but not the CCI bought more recently. I guess I'm not the only one.

Interesting.
I'm using both and having no issues. (Marvel)
I though they just re-designed the box!
Did CCI have any comment about that?

Do be careful with the Gecko, otherwise it will probably sell you a large insurance policy!mikemyers wrote:Oops..... until a few minutes ago, I had no idea what you were saying, or what a Geco had to do with it.james r chapman wrote:Interesting, my ultra slimy Geco sv cycle great in both my Nelson’s. Re: Comparison, CCI SV vs. Eley "target".
The CCI technician listened to everything I had to say, then told me to fill out the online form for support, and that they would be sending me a return shipping label for either a sample box, or my remaining CCI. I gave him the "lot number" (if that's what it is called) from the inside of the boxes of 50 rounds. He gave me the impression that he knew what I was talking about, and he didn't ask questions.DA/SA wrote:. the Eley std from the CMP uses the same bullet as the target and Club but a different lube. more of a wax lube.. Works just fine.. several folks here has shot it with good results.

I predict that you'll send them a sample. They'll "test" it and you'll get a message back that says "it tests just fine" and you'll get a box/brick of replacement ammo in the mail.
But that's just my experience...

Re: Comparison, CCI SV vs. Eley "target".
Well, that's OK too. Since this CCI ammo issue started, I have accepted there are a lot of fish in this sea, and when/if a provider does that, they'll have lost me as a customer. I had a nice chat with Justin at CCI. He listened to everything I said. If they try it out in cooler weather, maybe it will work fine. I have no way to test that until winter. You guys have given me lots of choices, and I now have a case of Eley on the way. I guess I'll need to do a whole lot more shootin' with my S&W Model 17 !10sandxs wrote:They listened to me as well when I was having issues and thought I'd gotten somewhere good... I was wrong...

I'm not sorry if I have to give up on CCI from now on. What I am sorry about, is a wasted a lot of people's time here helping me get my Nelson to work properly, when the feeding problems (Nelson and Model 41) were most likely ammunition problems. I learned a lot, and the 8# spring is likely a good idea anyway, but I suspect if I had been shooting Eley all along, I never would have posted this thread and the thread on the Nelson. I'm stupid about these things, I've gotten to think that a problem while using "good" products is 99.9% likely to be me, and very rarely, the product.

Don't beat yourself up over this, it's no big deal. I don't think anyone on this forum minds helping others out when they ask for it. Use the Eley Target and be happy.

Thanks, will do!
By the way, I got an email from Justin - CCI is mailing me a "call tag". after which UPS will come to my door to pick it up. They want all my remaining CCI ammo returned, that's three bricks. CCI is back on my "good guy" list.

Sounds like a wise move on CCI's part. They surely don't want to offend a large customer group and have them going to competitors for their "daily bread". My experience over the past couple of years is that several rimfire manufacturers have gone overboard with lubing their bullets. I'm not sure why.

Maybe now that the panic is over, they’ve slowed down the machines a tad.

The CMP 4c22ELYSTD5000 has paraffin as outside lube also.
Right now I'd almost be willing to swap about 4500 CCI sv for a like amount of Winchester 'Wildcat'

If it's bad ammo, defective, and doesn't work as it should, call CCI. I haven't heard back from them yet, but I'm sure they will take care of things. I could call them, but I already told them to take their time.
The CMP ammo I bought works flawlessly. I don't know what the lube is, but it doesn't cause any problems in my Model 41 or Nelson.
Or, switch to a revolver. :-)

Re: Comparison, CCI SV vs. Eley "target".
I tried Eley Target for the first time tonight with my Nelson conversion. It did not shoot as well as CCI SV. I shot both, and CCI grouped tighter at 25 yards. Not too impressed with the Eley since it cost $9/box compared to the CCI which cost $3.50/box.
