Slab Sided Grip recommendation for 1911
I found myself with a new wadgun that I want to replace the grips on. For quite few years I have used Herret D-45 grips on all my match guns but I thought now might be a good chance to try something different. I looked at the VZ website but they have a bewildering list of designs and options so I thought I would ask here for opinions on the best materials, designs and textures (of any brand really but I mentioned VZ because that is the site I looked at). I would prefer them to be CMP legal because if I like them, I would probably put a set on that gun too but that requirement is not set in stone. I do not want anatomical grips at all so conventional slab sided grips are what I'm looking for. If anyone has a favorite and some reasons why you like them I would appreciate hearing from you.
Thanks.
John

I really like the VZ grips in the slim format for the 191, since I have medium size hands. I also like the Kensight grips but they aren't as pretty as the VZ grips. Recently a customer of mine turned me on the a maker of 3D grips which are cheaper than the Kensight grips and have a sticker texture. Not as sticky as the VZ, but only $24.00 with free shipping. Let us know how they work. They look similar to the plastic ergo grips.

I have several pairs of Lava grips - I think that they are perfect for medium hands - really grippy, but not abrasive. I find that they feel very similar to 30dpi checkering or similar roughened frame areas so that I have a consistent feel and grip level for all parts of my hand and fingers. I can put pressure on my thumb and fingers comfortably and really create a repeatable grip "memory" during practise.
And you can order them in almost any conceivable color (but don't make the mistake I made of buying white - they look great when pristine, but are only good for safe queens, get dirty very quickly if on a well lubricated wad gun that is shot a lot).
Highly recommended.

I had the wider SIG grips on my Caspian wad gun for a while. They felt more comfortable than any other grips I've used. I recently put the Sharkskin grips back on that gun. The last word I would use for them is "comfortable", but even though I know I'm supposed to be gripping the gun mostly from front strap and back strap, fingers and seat of my palm, I feel I have better control of the gun with the Sharkskin grips. That they weigh next to nothing is a bonus.
In what way are Lava grips preferable to Sharkskin?

I guess if I order a pair in blood red, nobody will notice my ugly hammer. :-)
Very reasonably priced, too.

Hope this isn’t too much of a hijack but I’m also looking for grips for my ball gun. Stock slaps are just way to thin for me and from what I have been told I can’t add spacers or anything else. I’ve also been told to check Roco grips? For Cmp EIC I’m kind of limited

The D-45 Grips I referenced are a slab type profile but are thicker than standard grips. When EIC grips had to be standard issue, these failed an inspection at Perry once (but no other time) because they were too thick. The rules are a little more relaxed now but they do still need to be symetrical (side to side need to match) and there can't be palm swells, finger groves, thumb shelf etc. Try a pair of those to see how they feel to you.
Good Luck.

Which design did you get? That link goes to their main page and they look to have a few different choices. Let me know what you chose. Thanks.

first impressions. They are grippy not a deep a grip as the sharkskin.
The lava grips are not relieved for ambi safeties.
Thickness,
Sharkskin .268
Lava .230
I prefer a fuller grips, but, ladies, and medium hands might enjoy them.

Re: Slab Sided Grip recommendation for 1911
I use VZ Diamond Back Grips on my EIC gun and no slippage. Just make sure that the grips are symmetrical for EIC matches. My left grip has the relief cut for the magazines release while the right grip is full checkered. My gun would not pass inspection at Camp Perry because the grips were not symmetrical. Now I have a new relief cut in the right grip too.

My thought too but the armorer had a different opinion. No worries, nothing but a little sanding to make it acceptable.james r chapman wrote:Should have passed

Re: Slab Sided Grip recommendation for 1911
So I ordered a pair of the sharkskin grips based on these recommendations. I'm quite impressed by how the gun doesn't move. I fired the 1st 100 rounds out of this gun today and it never shifted position. It is a new RRA Wadgun with 20LPI on both the front strap and MSH so that's pretty aggressive as well but that in combination with the sharkskin grips was all I could ask for. Thanks to all who replied.
