Saturday sillyness Empty Saturday sillyness

Been collecting parts for a new wad gun and now have them.  Have also been agonizing over 5", 6", or hybrid. I've been shooting both side by side for a month now and like aspects of each, but it seems easier to shoot well with the 6" gun.

For the hybrid, I'm trying to capture the slide charicteristics of the 5 with the stability of the 6 so I'm thinking a 6" barrel with a 5" slide and an extra 1" of slide attached to the barrel so it won't reciprocate, but will add mass out front.  To see how this could feel, I made the prototype below. My 5" gun has a picatinny rail that I had drilled and tapped for a frame mount a while back so what the heck...  a chunk of a square tubing, a little double angle cutter work, pour some lead, throw in a self drilling screw for looks and poof... stabilizer prototype #1.  It aint pretty, but it works... at least i think it does... well see how it shoots tomorrow...

Well that was interesting.... sort of what I expected, but sort if not. The gun moves a lot less in sustained fire, but the "sharp" recoil if the 5" slide with lower movement was... different... not sure how to explain it, and I'm not sure I like it.  The "it takes forever" motion of the full 6" slide still feels better, but is slower back on target..

The top target is the first five shot fired.  The second one is a few targets later with 160 gr brazos, a different bullet so it shot lower than my standard.

Something like this? A lot of extra barrel weight not reciprocating.

That was the thought. Going to shoot it some more over the next week or two to make up my mind...

A couple of do it yourself test kits for the non machinists. I guess we could call this Sunday silliness.

Method one would be to screw a weight on to the end of a threaded barrel. A lot of fake silencers come to mind.

Method two would be to swap to a heavier barrel. This one is probably nose heavy. Very Happy
