Mason Talbert becomes High Master at 21!
Well he did it. Mason scored a 2623-111x at the Houston match this past weekend, and with that score achieved his High Master classification following the 2626-114x at Austin last weekend. What is even more exciting, he did this with Metallic sights. That's right, no optics, no dot, just iron sights on his Pardini 22 and his Accuracy X, Inc. Pro Plus 45 using the Brazos 200gr 45 SWC profile.
What is truly astonishing about it is that he did it at the age of 21. Nothing short of amazing! Please everyone give him your congratulations.
We are looking for help to figure out whether he is actually the youngest to achieve a Precision Pistol (Bullseye) High Master classification. A long-shot with so many other great shooters in the history of our sport, but please help us figure it out if you can.
BY THE WAY, THIS IS THE GUY MAKING YOUR BULLETS!

Congratulations to you Mason, that is truly astonishing at your age. I can see one of our service branches recruiting you soon. You have a good mentor and you practiced what he taught you.

Congratulations. An impressive feat for sure.
To your question, I believe Sokolowski did it as a junior.

The only people that I can think of that may have done it as Juniors would be Sokolowski or Christopher Jones from WA. Perhaps a very young service member, but I can't think of anyone that shot up (pun intended) that quickly without having already been shooting good scores as a Junior.
HM as a classification has only been around since '94...or a few years before Mason was born

My high master card just showed up in the mail one day in 94. I didn't even know the NRA added a classification until the I checked the mail that day. Effective Date 2/28/94.

Indeed! Prior to that there was an informal ranking of anyone who had broken 2600. Often, matches would place the 2600 crowd separate if there were enough at the match for their own award.Jon Eulette wrote:My high master card just showed up in the mail one day in 94. Great Job, Mason! Congrats!!
Re: Mason Talbert becomes High Master at 21!
I scored Adam Sokoloxki the year before he entered the USA. HE was a civilian,17 or 18 y.o. and IIRC he broke 2600 . That was before he entered the AMU. He also shot the next year as a junior while in the AMU. I don't know when he made HM.
Making HM is a major accomplishment at any age.

Re: Mason Talbert becomes High Master at 21!
I had the pleasure of shooting next to Mason at Houston's October match as well as our Club Championship match held last weekend. I also was his scorer for both events. It was something to approach his short line target time & again to observe it was another clean. He handled himself well and shunned the pressure he likely felt. He is quite the representative for up-and-coming bullseye shooters. He is young, has only been competing for a short period of time and is willing to share his knowledge and make suggestions when asked. Before the match began, I thought I overheard him say that he dry-fired a 2700 the day before. He may have also picked up a few tips from Jon at a recent bullseye clinic. Congrats to Mason on a job well done!

Congratulations Mr. Talbert! Anyone who can shoot as well as you has my respect. You, young man are on your way to great things in the shooting world. Perhaps some day you will break Brian Zins record of 12 national titles. As an old shooting buddy of mine use to say (Danny Estes) always remember the pointy end of the bullet goes down range!

Awesome achievement, Mason! Great to see that next generation of Precision Shooter is doing well, and contrary to popular notion, BullsEye Sport is alive.
And I like your bullets too, - they shoot well for me!
Congratulations!

Paul, was he using the waxed lead bullets or the hitec coated ones. I recently got some 160 hitec bullets from you hoping to cut down on barrel leading and smoke when shorting indoors. Shot my 45 indoors today for the first time and the hitec coating really cut the smoke down.

I think there were earlier posts showing his targets with Hi-Tek bullets.

All Hi tek. We've actually suspended the wax lubed. We were surprised to see very little demand for wax from the beginning. Old school bullseye shooters we're really the only guys who wanted wax. Then, Mason started shooting HM scores with Hi Tek and proved that it is just as good or better than wax. Now lots of traditionalist are embracing our golden bullets.
