EGW barrel bushing
Hi.
i have been thinking to upgrade mine Springfield Trophy Match with a more tight barrel bushing.
The original one can easely been moved by my fingers, no effort at all.
Would the drop-in version of EGW bb make a notable performence enchance, or should i go for the one that requires a GS?
The ID is the same. It's the OD that requires some polishing against the slide.
Regards

Re: EGW barrel bushing
I order EGW bushings for all my guns. I really doubt the *drop-in* bushing will have any impact on the accuracy. The way you do it is you have to measure the diameter of your barrel precisely using micrometer (not calipers!) with +/- .0005" precision. The OD is not that important, I usually order it oversized about .002" and the reduce the diameter with sandpapers of various grits. My goal is that a) I should not be able to turn bushing with my fingers and b) the gun can barely go into battery and even may require a little push for the slide to close completely. Then I use a dab of 2000 grit lapping compound in the tip of the barrel and work slide back and forth until it unlocks easily and fully goes into battery when a magazine with snap cap is inserted and slide is released.
Re: EGW barrel bushing
It needs to be fit to your gun. Measure the barrel and the slide. Order a bushing that would be snug on the barrel and snug in the slide. Fit the bushing to the slide so you can just turn it with your fingers without the barrel installed. Now fit the bushing ID to the barrel using fine sandpaper wrapped on a dowel close to the size of the barrel. Take a little off at a time and keep trying the bushing on the barrel. Once it fits. Install the barrel and bushing in the slide off the gun. Push the barrel into lockup and make sure it does not spring back at all. Lube, assemble and shoot.

It’s important not to remove anything from the barrel or the slide. The bushing is cheap to replace.

Get this one from Brownells. Will require barely polishing the ID and you can shoeshine polish/sand the OD in a vise. Will work perfect with minimal work.

Do you think i will see better accuracy with this pre-fit version?Jon Eulette wrote:Get this one from Brownells. Will require barely polishing the ID and you can shoeshine polish/sand the OD in a vise. Will work perfect with minimal work.

It's not that my gun shoots like shit today, but there is always room for improvment .
I don't mind to put some work behind if the GS version may give me more.

Re: EGW barrel bushing
The prefit has a .580 ID which the vast majority of 1911 barrels use as the std size for the bushing area so it will be tight.. the .702 OD will require filing/sanding down to enter your slide. Std. Spec is .700 in that area for the slide.
I suspect Jon is speaking from experience.

Re: EGW barrel bushing
I did exactly what you are contemplating. I fitted a slightly oversize EGW barrel bushing to my original barrel of my Springfield Trophy Match. I also installed a Cylinder & Slide firing group. My pistol is mechanically more accurate and much more shootable. I haven't tested it at 50 yards, but it shoots very well off-hand at 25 yards.Uppsala45acp wrote:Hi.
