Red Dot Appearance
First topic message reminder :
We all talk about how our dots look. Eyes with astigmatism make for seeing a less than pretty dot. I have those eyes. My dot looks like a star burst but I have never found it to be an issue with my shooting. Looked through my Aimpoint 9000SC last week with a camera and dang! Is this what you guys with perfect eyes see?

Re: Red Dot Appearance
"...1 MOA dot which allows me to shoot precisely..." Confuses me. Might understand the concept if shooting off sand bags but off hand? A 1 moa dot gets down to .50 moa at 50 yards. Makes .25 moa at 25 yards. If you guys are holding that well you are well over my head. My personal best with a red dot was a 2624. I did NOT hold .5 inches at 50 yards or .25 inches at 25 yards. Dang dot was everywhere at 50 and 25. Almost 1/2 of the 270 shots were Xs.
May have completely missed the difference in these red dot sighting systems too. I'd assumed, and treated them as such, that the only difference between the two was a screen that a red dot was projected on inside a cover and a red dot projected on a screen not in a cover.

Re: Red Dot Appearance
That was for a 2-gun match not a BE match, but the concept is the same. If you want a larger dot for an off hand shot, you can dial the brightness up. Just trying to help with information in terms of dots that don't turn into shooting stars.

Re: Red Dot Appearance
Personally like a fine dot at 50. Turn it up brighter at 25. Find that a fine dot makes me try to shoot Xs at 25. I repeat again. The star burst dot I see, big or small, does NOT inhibit my ability to shoot off hand. It is just not a pretty little well defined dot.

How do the holographic sights work for Bullseye? Any advantages or disadvantages?
Do they eliminate astigmatism issues, or just minimize them?

Re: Red Dot Appearance
Looks like smoke and mirrors to me. A single one dimensional dot versus multiple dots to create a two dimensional dot. Nothing there to save you from the fuzzy demon..

Re: Red Dot Appearance
It's not smoke and mirrors, they are hugely different to my eyes when I look through them. However, I would advice anybody who has trouble with the reflex sights to look through the holographic sights to see if it works better for them before buying.

Re: Red Dot Appearance
Actually for .22 anyway, I find the $25 Simmons dots work very well!

Re: Red Dot Appearance
I think the Simmons are yet another type of RDS, not reflex or holographic. I've heard good things about their visibility for astigmatism. The main concern is their quality.

Re: Red Dot Appearance
I have a meeting scheduled for 9am my time with the fellow at Aravind Eye Hospital who designs the IOL's for cataract surgery, including Toric. Once I know more about Toric, I want to ask him if it is possible to put a lens on a red dot scope to correct the problem. I suspect this is just wishful thinking, but who knows.
I'd like to see a holographic sight sometime, but since I don't have astigmatism, I don't know of any need for it. Very curious as to how/if it works for me.

Re: Red Dot Appearance
It's a good idea and I actually did ask my ophthalmologist that exact question a few years ago, but she said no. However, I would also be very interested in hearing what your doctor says.
Would also be interested in what your eyes do with the holographic sights. From what I know, it is not something as simple as astigmatism and how well it works varies which is the reason why it is important to test it first hand.

Re: Red Dot Appearance
Would love to hear a follow-up on this. Your buddy in India may be sitting on a great commercial opportunity.....
