serial number on frame Empty serial number on frame

Post by davidbullseye Mon Jan 27, 2020 10:46 pm

Hello all,

I recently bought an ERMA ESP 85a for my wife with both the .22 slide/upper and the .32 slide/upper.  A NY FFL that I spoke to was concerned that there was no serial number on the frame but only on the slides/uppers.  Each slide/upper had a different serial number.

Is this because it is a pistol which has a conversion to a different caliber?

Is it the same with Walther GSP in .22 and .32 or Hammerli 280 in both calibers?  Do they also only have the serial number on the slide/upper and not on the frame?

Thanks for the responses.

David

Hello David,

I live in NY and need to know this too.

Did you buy them in NY or on line and trying to ship them in?

Do you live in NY and already put them on your permit successfully?

Thanks -- Gus

The "receiver" is the upper.  The GRIP FRAME is a universal fit part and is not regulated by ATF.

I'll have to check with our County Pistol Permit Clerk.

In the past I bought a bare oversize 1911 frame only with a serial number on it and it had to be registered with intended caliber. It's marked as a "Frame" only on my permit.

I’m sure KC is referring to the upper as having the registerable serial #
Much like a Ruger Mark pistol

How about every SIG P320 or P365 pistol ever built, the serial number is on the Fire Control Unit. Not the grip frame nor the upper. Perfectly fine with ATF. The FCU is the gun for ATF purposes.

Greetings,

In Europe, the upper usually has the serial number.

During importation, the Walther GSP, for example, also has to have the serial applied to the grip frame, for in Europe it is not a controlled item.

A lot of folks that lived in Europe bought and brought back with them their pistols.

This is how yours may have arrived in the USA.

Cheers,

Dave
