super loads - Favorite loads for 38 Super Empty Favorite loads for 38 Super

Hello All!!

I need your help. I am just beginning to load for a 38 Super. I have purchased 115 GR, Hornady FMJ and Hornady 115 gr XTP. My favorite powders have always been Winchester 231, WST and Bullseye especially for the 38 special and .45 ACP. But I'm always open to new powders. I don't want to push this at maximum velocities. Rather something pleasant to shoot but not a wimp load.

I'm shooting this in a Colt 1911, Series 80.

Thoughts please!!

Brian

I'm using 5.5 grains of accurate #7 under a Brazos 150 grain coated bullet.
Seems to be a pleasant load that hangs together to the long line.

As always this is not an endorsement and consult your manual (manuals) before operating any equipment or vehicles.

130gr RN on top of 5.6 gr of N340 or 6.40 gr of Long Shot, OAL - 1.270" / WinSP
125gr FP on top of 6.8gr of Power Pistol, OAL - 1.210" / CCI500 or WinSP

Tested in several guns with both 5" (Colt SC, SARO, DW PM38) and 6" (Tanfoglio Gold Team, Les Baer, SA Omega, G40 MOS with KKM) barrels out to 25 yards.

4.5 - 4.7 gr of WST behind a 115gr JHP as proven to be a very good load in many .38 Supers. If a 125 JHP then about 2-3/10ths less.

I use 5.0 of BE 86 with a 125 HAP (hornady action pistol). @990 fps.  With a ransom rest at 25 yards all 5 rounds could be covered by a quarter.

5.1 - 5.3 gr W231 should be a good load with 115 JHP or bring it down by 2/10 for 125 JHPs
