Excessive leading .38 wadcutter
First topic message reminder :
I would like the help of the members of the forum for some reloading advice. The basics are: Bill Davis PPC S&W pistol shooting 50 yard bullseye. My basic load has been 3.1 grains of Winchester 231. When I bought the gun I was even told that it liked this load. I have been loading Speer and Hornady 148 gr. HBWC with what I consider good success. I purchased 1000 of the Precision Delta 148 HBWC with match lube, and have been getting leading like crazy. Could be me, but I think groups have grown larger as well...but not sure, as my groups aren’t that good to begin with. I placed a call to Precision Delta, and they said that I should be loading 2.9 grains.... so I did make up a bunch. The gun still seems very dirty after 30-40 rounds. Tonight I measured the diameter of all three bullets (I always keep a sample). The Speer and the Hornady both measure .358 diameter. The Precision Delta measures at .3565. Could this be my problem? I did buy 1000 of the Precision’s, as I had heard so much good about them. I know certain guns like certain ammo, should I just “chalk these up” to a learning curve?
Thanks for any advice.
Joe

3.3GR OF 231 IS A GREAT LOAD. TRY IT, BUT I DON'T THINK IT WILL HELP MUCH. JP

Try them with added lube and in unresized cases. Maybe right n the edge of success.

I use mineral sprites NO TO GASOLINE. Just swirl them around in a plastic bowl, let dry on a towel then tumble lube. You will see a difference when shooting.james r chapman wrote:I've found that anything other than Remingtons fat slugs, work best if you as the late Jerry Keefer did and use gasoline to wash the lube off the bullets then tumble lube with 45-45-10 alox lube to get just a thin coating on them.
let them sun dry and you shouldn't have issues.
Being a HBWC bullet, the skirt should easily expand to fill the cylinder throats.
3.1 WW 231 is a well established load. should shoot x-ring at 50 yds out of a Davis gun.
calipers or micrometers?
PD'S .38 wadcutters are designated as .357 as are most swaged bullets.

yeah, mineral sprites work well if the Orc's watch over them.
I also use Naptha.

I load 2.5 and 2.7 gr of Bullseye under PD and have had no issues at all in my 52 or revolver.

IMy first order from DP had he std lube and were the dirtiest loads I have ever shot. Is it possible you got the std lubed bullets by mistake?
My load was 2.7 of BE and or 2.7 of WST.

Is your crimp too tight with a light load? This could scrape lead off as the bullet exits. Just a thought
