Need a slide milled for sights
I have a Kimber desert warrior my wife gave me and it’s a great shooter and series 70 type ignition system. However, it has fixed sights!
The front sight is a dovetail type deal that could easily be replaced but the rear sight seems to be a Novak style cut. I’m curious if cutting it for a nomad style or Ken sight or even a spare Springfield rear sight I have could be possible. My hope would be for the finish to not be harmed other than where it’s milled.
Photo included for help. Like I mentioned above having the slide re milled is not a problem. Not sure who I could have do it. I need a ball gun for EIC and a new RO is not in the budget. This was a gift from my wife so selling it is not an option
Look forward to any help
Joe

I drew up both the Novak and the Bomar in Solidworks and superimposed them for the same reason. The Novak has removed too much material to now mount a Bomar cleanly. I got an adjustable Novak.

Brandon Bunker makes a Nomar base that you can put a Kensight into it to get a Bomar type sight on the slide. You will need to machine the slide and fit the Nomar base.

Hello Jon,
Since Kimber's sight cut is 60 degrees x 0.3605" and Novak's sight cut is 65 degrees x 0.495", when you cut the new dovetail will it impact the passive safety device held by the sight?

Great question Jim. Didn't realize the difference in the dovetails. I have been known to drill/mod sight bases for the safety garbage!spursnguns wrote:Jon Eulette wrote:Brandon Bunker makes a Nomar base that you can put a Kensight into it to get a Bomar type sight on the slide. Guys, Joe stated his gun is series 70, so passive safety is not applicable.
I don't understand the issue though. Why would you mill the slide for other sight profile when you can easily and affordably just get an adjustable novak sight, even from Kensight?

Hello Tripscape,
Kimber's rear sight cut is different than Novak's. That sight won't work unless you mill a new dovetail.

Re: Need a slide milled for sights
Folks, the Kimber uses an LPA sight cut. The adjustable sight from Novak for the Kimber will work. But that is elevation only, there are no windage adjustments. I don't know of any other way to fit a sight to that slide without using an LPA cut sight. The cost of putting in a dutchman and re-cutting everything would WAY exceed any benefit of going with an LPA cut sight.

Re: Need a slide milled for sights
Depending how you use the sight you can drift it for windage. A decent drift fixture will probably be much cheaper than any milling and you will keep your finish on the slide. If you know how to use sight calculator, then.you can drift scientifically and be done quick.

Re: Need a slide milled for sights
Look up Nomar base on Google. You can buy the sight for $100 complete and have your slide machined to accept it. Your existing dovetail is recut and the slide machined lower to accept the thicker base. It’s no different than taking a bald slide and cutting it for a low mount Bomar/Kensight.
I made a similar base back in the 90’s.
It’s already been there done that. All the adjustable Novaks I’ve tried have gross adjustments and I don’t like them.

I don't have the packaging anymore but I am guessing I used the ALM01.

Re: Need a slide milled for sights
Note that there are many sight blades available on LPA sights; serrated, white, outline, low profile (the product photo above is one), smooth black etc. Nobody seems to carry the full set, so it can take some searching.
Also, be sure you keep the front sight height in mind. If it's low, you need the low profile models.

I’d like to use it for EIC matches. No dots allowed
