wd 40 for ammo?
Hi just loaded some 45 semi wads. and remember reading somewhere here that some people use WD 40 spray on the bullets but i don't remember the rest of the formula does this help the brass from sticking ? how soon do you use it before shooting? dry time? thanks for the help! Vin.

Shouldn't be necessary at all.

You don't want to get WD-40 any where near your ammo .The vehicle in WD-40 will deactivate your primers in a heartbeat.

I call BS on these last two comments.
Place your rounds 25 at a time in an old towel, spray with a wd 40 fogger, rub them around a bit in the towel. Take each round and wipe the excess goop or wax or whatever from each round while you inspect each round. Place them into your ammo carriers and they will be good for many years to come.

If your pistol won't run properly loaded SWC ammo you need to focus on fixing your pistol instead of trying to lube your finished ammo.

Here's my question; why do you feel it's necessary?

There was a cop that cleaned his ammo with WD-40. He got into a situation. His gun did not fire. In the end they traced it back to the cleaning of the bullets with WD.

I wouldn't use any penetrating oil on ammo. I have never cleaned my loaded ammo after loading lead bullets because I never found it necessary. The story about the cop came out in the mid-70's. I remember seeing a bulletin about it, shortly after it happened. I imagine that cop sprayed that gun and ammo with a lot of WD-40!

Re: wd 40 for ammo?
More to it than that I believe...a lot of service ammo used to sit in loops or in the gun too long ( some cases, years) and degraded. I think ammo policy has changed. Anyways, not that I like the stuff, I don't but my ammo doesn't sit long.
wd40 45 ammo
thanks for all the input! so i'm not using wd40. the reason this came up in the first place is that sometimes it seams that in my clark 45 with kart barrel some of the brass tends to stick when being ejected. i had seen that someone posted that wd40 on the brass and left to dry would alleviate this.
Re: wd 40 for ammo?
As stated above, this is a gun issue, not a ammo issue.
It sounds like it needs more extractor tension if it isn't pulling the cases out of the chamber.

Re: wd 40 for ammo?
If you think your brass is sticky now, it will be even stickier with WD40 after it dries out. WD40 is a water displacing oil and not a very good one (there are way better, like VV-L-800) the problem comes after it dries. It leaves a soft gummy wax residue. That attracts dirt and dust like flies to garbage.
If you want a waxy coating use a car wax that has Carnuba wax. That is a hard wax and won’t attract dirt.

Easiest way to alleviate issue related to brass would be to run ammo through the dry tumbler for half an hour. Crashed walnut shells or corn cobs would work perfectly for this purpose.
