Stove pipe
I recently have been having issues with my gun. I have not changed the powder, the primer or brass. Now about every 5th round stove pipes. Not due to limp wristing. I have a 13# Recoil spring in a 5” Cabot full size gun. Could it be the spring thst needs changing or something else. I tested the powder and it is at 4.5gr BE w/185 RNFP?
Thanks in advance

Re: Stove pipe
Approximately how many rounds does your recoil spring have on it. If it’s more than 2-3k throw it away and replace. You can afford it since you have a Cabot! Lol
Also another place to look is the magazine spring. Check to see if it’s all the mags or just one. The magazine springs should be replaced every so often and you can afford it because you have a Cabot! Lol

Re: Stove pipe
You didn't mention when the last time was when it was cleaned and lubed.

If he lived over by you he could just hold it out the window and have it cleaned! Stay safe my friendDA/SA wrote:You didn't mention when the last time was when it was cleaned and lubed.

Re: Stove pipe
It was stripped and cleaned about 12 months ago. I have cleaned it every 750-1000 rounds

I would say it has more than 3000 rounds for sure on the spring

I'd bet a bit of maintenance would fix the problem!

Pull the extractor. Clean it and the extractor tunnel. While you are messing with it check for proper tension. Also if you continue to have issues note what magazine is in the gun when it happens

Re: Stove pipe
I went to the range today and changed mag but still got a stove pipe on the 5th round. For reference I load 5 rounds each time so it’s the last one that stove pipes.
I was hoping that was it but not so lucky. Should I try changing the recoil spring before doing anything else? Sorry I have never had this issue so I truly appreciate all the advice

Extractor tension most likely; add some. Recoil spring has very little to do with extraction in my opinion. I’ve seen undersprung ball guns shooting 230 gr hardball extract 100%.

Re: Stove pipe
Thank you all for the help. Took it to the range today after increasing the tension a smidge. Worked perfectly
Thanks again
