I need a moa expert here
I am shooting a Ruger 204 40 gr Hornaday v max bullet out of a 14 inch contender. About 4000 FPS. So far I had several groundhog kill shots over 250 yards. Just bought a vortex scope that has MOA readings etched in the glass . Its a 3x18x44 strike eagle scope. Its simply a stunning scope. $500 scope for $299 at Euro Optics. Its is every bit as good as my Zeiss and Swarovski scope. My ruger drop chart is as follows according to hornaday. 100 yards 0.7, 200 yards 0, 300 yards -4.3, 400 yards -13.2, 500 yards -28.1. I need to convert the bullet drop inches to MOA . Thanks

This was the old scope on the pistol. I went to a higher power scope. Just had a 1 pound trigger job.

1 MOA @ 100 yds =1.047 inches. So, divide bullet drop by 1.047 to get MOA's.
For example, 400yd drop is 13.2 in divided by 1.047=12.6 MOA. In short since 1 MOA is so close to 1", fancy calculations are not really necessary in the real world.

Re: I need a moa expert here
A MOA is roughly equal to 1" at 100 yards, 4" at 400 yards ect... So if your gun has a 13.2" drop at 400 yard then you'll divide by 4 to get to a 3.3 moa drop. If you want to delve deeper into ballistics check out the Strelok app, its free and quite good, I use it for my rifles to calculate drop out to 1000 yards.

Your calculations are incorrect.Olde Pilot wrote:1 MOA @ 100 yds =1.047 inches. So, divide bullet drop by 1.047 to get MOA's.

That’s a lot of business going on there on that reticle. Most of it you’ll never use.
From what I can see the first hash mark below center is two minutes of elevation. After that it changes to one minute increments. Simply put, one MOA is one inch at 100 yds, 2 inches at 200, 3 inches at 300, and so on. If your gun is zeroed at 200 yds, and Mr. Groundhog is settin’ up pretty out at 300, hold the hash mark with the 4 beside it right on his noggin and squeeze!

My own spreadsheet gives these yardages and drop values based on 4000fps, BC=.275 and the zero at 200. Also the usual 1.5" scope above bore.
100 | 0.6 |
125 | 0.7 |
150 | 0.7 |
175 | 0.4 |
200 | 0.0 |
225 | -0.6 |
250 | -1.5 |
275 | -2.6 |
300 | -3.9 |
325 | -5.5 |
350 | -7.4 |
375 | -9.5 |
400 | -12.0 |
425 | -14.8 |
450 | -18.0 |
475 | -21.6 |
500 | -25.6 |

Re: I need a moa expert here
Thanks a bunch. Is the numbers on the right moa crosshair markings in the scope?

The bullet is still moving at 1800 fps at 500 yards.

Is the path of the bullet is what I use on the moa hash marks?

Re: I need a moa expert here
Divide the drop in inches by the yards divided by 100
For 275y: 2.6"/(275y/100)
for 500y: 25.6"/(500y/100)
For 275y: 2.6"/(275y/100)
for 500y: 25.6"/(500y/100)

If the groundhog is as close as in the picture you probably don't need to worry about MOA!

Re: I need a moa expert here
Is this right ??? 28.1 inch bullet drop divided by 500 yards divided by 100 =562 MOA in my scope? So i would have to use the 5 hash/crosshair mark in the scope? All hash parks are 1 moa apart in the scope.
12 inch bullet drop divided by 400 yards divided by 100 =0.0003. So i would have to put the Moa crosshair in the scope on number 3 hash mark?
Wow i even have 1 moa Turret knobs on the scope. now I have to figure out click adjustments. LOL
