.45 factory practice ammo
I just received my first .45 bullseye gun, and have a question re ammo.
First off, I do not reload, so that's off the table, for now.
From what I hear, Atlanta Arms Elite or Federal Gold Cup Match are the best ammo for competitions.
But what about practice ammo? I am not a Master that I need the Tenex of .45.
Realizing that ammo is scarce, what can you recommend? bullet weight, fps, brand name, etc...
Thanks in advance.

You're still going to pay $.40 a round for that Zero ammo, good stuff though. You can reload your own for half that with good components. If you plan on getting even remotely serious about BE you'll need to reload unless you want to spend a lot of cash for loaded ammo.

200 SWC and 185 JHP should both be excellent.

Go with the 185 for recoil reduction. Sometimes 200 will group slightly better at 50 yards but being a new shooter its not worth the added recoil.

Re: .45 factory practice ammo
If you want good practice ammo, I’d contact Loader Monkey out of Michigan.
jack@loadermonkey.com You can tell him that Ashley sent you.
I’d ask Jack to load you 2000-5000 rounds loaded as 1000 rounds of Zero 185 JHP and the rest with a 185 or 200 grain lead bullet. Use the lead bullets for training and the JHP for matches. He is currently loading for one of the service teams and is desperately short of LArge primers, so you might need to wait.

Ashley, if you don't mind, I would like to also use your name when reaching out to Jack.

Do you know what powder and charge they use? What velocity (or power factor) do they load to?zanemoseley wrote:Go with the 185 for recoil reduction. Sometimes 200 will group slightly better at 50 yards but being a new shooter its not worth the added recoil.

I've never bought their lead SWC ammo, just their JHP.

Re: .45 factory practice ammo
You want to get ammo with a 185 or 200 grain with velocities of 750-850. You can decrease the spring load of your recoil spring if function issues arise. I don’t know precisely what Jacks load is, but it seems to shoot well. Jack is a Highpower shooter and doesn’t have an all-up bullseye gun but this is what he got at 50 and 25 yards. The gun and ransom rest was borrowed.

Pretty much everything on the Roze 45ACP loaded ammo page is 'out of stock.'
I'm in a similar situation. Recently acquired an SARO, but no match ammo for practice.
I had a local shooter offer to let me load using their equipment, but I don't think all the components are available right now.

I called them this morning and placed an order for 1000 wad cutters. They said they'd inform when they are shipping and charge my card then. She was not able to give me any idea on time frame... I asked "weeks, months, years?" and she said "We have zero idea."SonOfAGun wrote:Aprilian wrote:I shot these before I started reloading. http://www.rozedist.com/mm5/merchant.mvc

I know you said reloading is out of the question for you, but it might be a good idea to start acquiring components (bullets, powder, ect.) When I started out with 45 I had several more established shooters offer to let me use their reloading equipment.
Side note on lead vs jacketed, shoot in practice what you plan to shoot in matches, then buy in bulk. A good 45 will easily shoot sub 3" at with decent lead SWC ammo, and with a bit of effort even better. Jacketed may have a slight accuracy advantage in some cases but if that slight difference is worth it for your needs is something you will need to personally evaluate.

Re: .45 factory practice ammo
Hi Mike,
ASYM sometimes has .45ACP in bulk or cosmetic blemishes for sale. I do not see any on their website right now, but keep looking. Their ammo is good stuff, and their customer service is top notch.
https://asymammo.com/45-acp/ (maybe not in your price range for "practice ammo", but there's a good school of thought that says you should train with what you shoot in matches. I'm not going to argue the dollars and cents in this thread.)
https://asymammo.com/cosmetic-seconds/
I can empathize with reloading being "off the table" for whatever reason. I fought that uphill battle with some service rifle shooters for years. Sometimes it's just not something that you're able to do, and it's preferable to purchase factory ammo.
I have NFI in ASYM, BTW; I'm just some guy.
Cheers,
JB
