CMP Rule book updates 2021
The CMP made updates to the rule books for 2021, worth looking over.

It is strongly recommended that eyewear worn on firing lines meet or exceed the ANSI Z87.1 safety standard impact protection. Competitors’ eyewear must be worn so that the two lenses remain in front of the eyes during firing (see diagram).
As it reads and if you look at the diagram Rx glasses should be fine. My Rx glasses have lenses that exceed Z87.1, it is getting more common for this to be the case.

Re: CMP Rule book updates 2021
Now let me see if I got this right. If an organization runs A Series of CMP shoots including an EIC match and smallbore and or high-power no one can wear the single lens competitive shooting glasses. I think that this is a poor decision by CMP because they will lose some shooters who use a single lens glasses for EIC or small bore or high power etc.

Knobloch 37mm lenses are 1,456". The rule said 1.30" so if you mount a second lens in place of a blinder you should be good.

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks. I do have a second lens that I can install on my Knobloch glasses. Life is good again
Now, does this rule apply to ALL CMP matches, including the new Match Pistol, or only to EIC matches?

So now CMP is starting to get into the equipment race just like the NRA and international did years ago. Yes the change to having dual lenses might seem like a very little thing some but to some it’s just indicative of the way the sport involves not necessarily for the better To get more shooters into the CMP program

I guess those that use champion Varga or knoblocks are going to have to source lenses, lens holder and the screw on attachment. I am sure it can be done but will really be worth it to just shoot in CMP matches.

Re: CMP Rule book updates 2021
On the other hand maybe CMP is concerned about the width of the blinders on shooting glasses.. I believe the current legal size for international shooting is 30 mm wide is the maximum size. Perhaps CMP is trying to move people to a larger size blinder I am sure those are readily available the clip ons —the black or translucent ones you can get from most of the online shooting suppliers. But this is really a wild guess but an interesting one. I would like see if CMP reads this forum and could reply to that possibility of using a larger opaque blinder on the non-shooting eye instead of a glass lens that in all probability will be made opaque by the shooter.

Re: CMP Rule book updates 2021
Prescription safety glasses are reasonably widely available and not massively expensive, but I have now grown to appreciate the adjustability of my pistol shooting glasses. Before I got the Champion/Knobloch kits I tried a pair of high clarity "Gargoyles" with an Eyepal and a clip on blinder. Worked OK and I've kept them for use at certain ranges where the SRO insists on full safety specs.
But what I now want to find is a convenient way to attach and adjust the Champion/Knobloch holders on to a customised safety glass frame. That will be another winter project whilst I am away from actual shooting.

I have a distance lens on the right side of my Knobloch's, and a reading lens plus a flip up blinder on the left side.jscot111 wrote:Knobloch 37mm lenses are 1,456". The rule said 1.30" so if you mount a second lens in place of a blinder you should be good.

I have been at more than one club over my past 40 years of shooting that have had sign offs on liability of injury and Safety. FYI the eBay supplier for shooting glasses parts and more is nikkonos. Sold parts for Varga and Knobloch can be found there. Champion and others I suspect can be found by suppliers in the United States. Cost for my Varga 3000 glasses would be about $62 including shipping from Canada. This would include the lens holder and attachment screws. It does not include the cost of the lens.
It seems like a trifling amount but it’s just one more thing to have to buy use and get and lose. LOL

Re: CMP Rule book updates 2021
Thank you XMAN for reminding me about Nikkonos (or Cibles Canada). They are the importer from China of those cute little NG spotting scopes, which many folks really like, but did not work for me. Their range of target shooting glasses is really excellent, and the prices are very good.
Prompted by some questions from Dave Forman, I've just gone through all of my "kit" of shooting glasses and parts - my winter project is going to be to create a "hybrid" set of adjustable Knobloch style glasses with full safety eyepieces so that I will be fully CMP compliant next year.
This "eyewear war" is getting complicated; one set for NRA, one set for ISSF & Air Pistol, one set for CMP!!!!!!

I seem to think that the set for CMP with some dark tape or translucent tape put on the non-shooting eye piece might suffice for NRA, ISSF and all the others.

I read somewhere, the new rule is because someone at CMP South had a rifle blow up on the line this past summer. That is the reason for the rule change

Re: CMP Rule book updates 2021
Boy I would really like to get more information on that. Such as
What kind of rifle, any injuries sustained, were they wearing eye protection of any kind? All that kind of stuff. That’s why signing a waiver for liability is so popular. I would venture a guess that it was a high power blow up probably most likely a reload.

This is an older post by CMP that explained what happened and what their reasoning but it doesn’t quite track with the way they are making dual glass protection. For specific item is about halfway down the article and it was a high power rifle catastrophic failure and I might add the shooter was wearing eye protection of HIS choice and had no injury according to the story.

I'm sure people that can afford a set of knoblocks (& guns, ammo, travel, lodging) will up and quit the whole thing at the prospect of having to buy a 2nd lens & lens holder because mandatory eye pro makes it some kind of gear race.
It should have been eyes ears and eci's the whole time.

Re: CMP Rule book updates 2021
I know nothing about Service Rifle (or any other kind of rifle, to be honest). I definitely, dearly, thank whoever influenced my continued eyesight acuity at the age of 65.
But. There are are lots of folks of all ages whose eyesight is not perfect. Yes, no doubt, Knoblochs, etc., are not cheap. Neither are good ammo and accurate pistols. Rifle jackets, slings, etc., are also costly, but, I guess not required in all rifle classes. Being able to actually see and focus on the sight/target is kind of fundamental to any precision firearm sport. Safety is also fundamental.
Personally, I am a relative newbie, I am trying to reach the limit of my physical/mental ability. The best possible eyewear is the #1 benefit to my achievement. Beyond guns, ammo, etc. IMHO

Yes, the word on the Book of Faces was that some duffer with a Garand either used the wrong powder, or had a significant over-charge.bmize1 wrote:I read somewhere, the new rule is because someone at CMP South had a rifle blow up on the line this past summer. That is the reason for the rule change
