S&W 52-2 barrel leading
I have shot about 400 reloads of 2.8 GR of Bullseye and
Remington HBWC bullets through my model 52 since I purchased it.
I never had the need to brush the barrel in my 45 ACP guns using lead
bullets and was surprised to see significant leading in the barrel of
the 52 for the first inch and a half in front of the chamber.
Is this a common condition?
I know the HBWC bullets are dead soft however the velocity is low.
I suppose I could or should brush the bore with a bronze brush at each cleaning but
would like to hear this is expected.
I shot my first 1800 match in Manchester CT last WE and broke 800 with the
52 and really had fun with this pistol!
Had a great ( for me) 22 stage with an 862.
I need to practice more with the 52 however the primer shortage will prevent this at the present time.
Thanks for the replies, G

Re: S&W 52-2 barrel leading
Looks like a common problem. Actually I never had a leading problem with Remington bullets, but with Zero bullets I get a lot of leading in the barrel. I know there's a way to reduce the leading by re-lubing the bullets, but I never bothered (and these days I don't shoot my M52 a lot anyway).

How you load them is critical to prevent a smaller id case from swaging the bullet. Lots of info here on that with a little searching.

Duke,
I purchased an extended and larger diameter expander from Photo escape (SP)
and adapted it to fit the LEE die I use for that exact reason.
Bullets are much easier to seat now but still a PITA compared to the 45ACP lead.
I expect it would be next to impossible to do on my Dillon.
I am using my RCBS single stage i purchased in 1970!

I don't have one of these pistols but I do lust for one of them for sure. I do find it interesting that the hard to find Remington bullets that seem to be the largest in diameter (which I would assume would be squeezed down the most in the barrel) seem to be the ones that everybody says shoot the best.

I have the same issue with my 52. I clean it every time I shoot and use a thin lab spatula to scrap the lead from the chamber. You would be surprised what comes out. I use 2.5 to 2.8 gr of Bullseye over Precision Delta 148 gr HBWC.

I have not had any leading issues with Remington or Magnus HBWC’s but had lots with hard DEWC’s. Also using 2.8 Bullseye.
