1911 frame mount
Looking for suggestions on a 1911 frame mount for a 1911. I’ve only used slide mounts and am now wanting to try frame mounts. Also, any smith that can install it.

Jerry Keefer used to speak highly of David Sams frame mount.

Re: 1911 frame mount
Just my opinion, but before you modify a gun for one, reach out to shooters local to you and see if you can borrow/try a gun with one first. In my experience (first wadgun had an older weigand mount) the general handling/feel during use is different. Great for light loads, but not as beneficial for warmer loads if that particular gun likes them for the longline.

Re: 1911 frame mount
I never used a frame mount but I did try to use a grip mount. The grip mount always seemed awkward and unbalanced to me. It was good for load testing of hardball guns off a sandbag.
Your mileage may vary.

I like frame mounts that mount the dot as low as possible over the bore. I think the best ones are the old George Huening World Custom Pistols Inc mounts from back in the late 1980s/early 1990s when he was still in business. I'm pretty sure David Sams copied his design, because Sams mounts look like the old WCPi mounts, but the WCPi mounts are made of carbon fiber honeycomb, while the Sams are just aluminum.
I think the next best are the Sams mounts, but he wants a lot of money for them, then even more to install them.
I think the next best after that are a design made Wilson Custom and Clark Custom. I don't think Wilson makes them anymore, but Clark lists them here for pretty cheap: https://clarkcustomguns.com/product/clark-custom-1911-frame-mount/
Springfield Armory made a fairly nice frame mount back in the late 1980s/early 1990s, but they don't turn up very often.
After that, you have the Weigand mounts, but the dot sits pretty high up with them.
Basically, look at old IPSC/USPSA guns from the late 1980s/early 1990s, back when they used tubed red dots, before they all went to C-Mores.
Using a frame mount should allow you to decrease your loads quite a bit without affecting reliable cycling because you don't have to worry about all that extra mass on your slide.

Hello lablover,
I'm a firm believer in frame mounts. Try either the David Sams offering or the one from Double Alpha Academy....

This is all going to be dependent on the dot you want to use. What dot are you planning on?

Re: 1911 frame mount
I have several 1911s and striker fired guns with slide mounted optics. I also have a CZ TSO 9mm with a frame mount. I LOVE the frame mount on that gun. It sits very low and with the Vortex Venom on top it sits about as high as a red dot in a rear sight mount. Follow up shots are easier. Of course, this gun weighs over 50 ounces set up like this. Do try and shoot one first - some people don't like them, but I think that is mostly because they are different.

Lablover, I have a Sams 1911 with his frame mount. I have the Aimpoint H1 with Shue shades, and love it. We live on opposite sides of the state, but if we can ever get together you are welcome to shoot it.

For a tube style sight it's going to be Sams or Weigand. That is apples to oranges. But the price tag is also apples to oranges.lablover wrote:Matchdot 2kc.crawford.7 wrote:This is all going to be dependent on the dot you want to use. What dot are you planning on?

I’ve had several tell me I want nothing to do with a frame mount. I shot one last week and will say the feel was totally different and I liked it

I shoot one on my 45. Only thing I had to do was cut the base shorter because I was getting a ejection failure
