38 super bullet seating
Hi
I just started fooling with a 38 super. From what I'm reading the OAL should be 1.250. If I use that number the bullet seems to sit to high in the case. There is a blue line around the bullet , I'm guessing that's full of lube, it mostly sticks out of the case at that dimension. The crimp is grabbing the bullet on the little strip of lead below the blue line. Doesn't look right to me, haven't loaded any yet so there's plenty of time to change it. Should I just lower the bullet past the blue line and ignore the recommended OAL ?
These are flat nose lead, 120 gn.
Thanks for any advice , Tom

Re: 38 super bullet seating
OAL will vary from bullet to bullet.
If the lube is showing you're not seating deep enough.
Did you drop a test round into the chamber? You MAY find the bullet hitting the rifling leade before it chambers completely.

Yes I chamberd it and it sat fine. I'm guessing just seat it deeper, I wasn't sure if that 1.250 is a critical dimension.
Thanks, Tom

Re: 38 super bullet seating
You may want to compare your load to a factory round to see how far into the case they are seating.
Seating depth can paly games with the starting pressure.

COL Note:
Per Ramshot (and all other reloading suppliers):
“SPECIAL NOTE ON CARTRIDGE OVERALL LENGTH (COL)
It is important to note that the SAAMI COL values are for the firearms and ammunition manufacturers industry and must
be seen as a guideline only.
The individual reloader is free to adjust this dimension to suit their particular firearm-component-weapon combination.
This parameter is determined by various dimensions such as
1) magazine length (space),
2) freebore-lead dimensions of
the barrel,
3) ogive or profile of the projectile and
4) position of cannelure or crimp groove.
• Always begin loading at the minimum "Start Load".
• Increase in 2% increments towards the Maximum Load.
• Watch for signs of excessive pressure.
• Never exceed the Maximum Load.”
Your COL (OAL) is determined by your barrel and your gun and your magazine and the specific bullet you are using.
What worked in a pressure barrel or in my gun has very little to do with what will work in your gun. Load a couple of dummy rounds (no powder and no primer) to the max. COL (OAL) and see if it fits your magazine, feeds in your gun, and chambers in your barrel.
Seat the bullet slightly deeper until you achieve all three of these goals. This is the COL (OAL) for you in your gun with that make of bullet.

No, there's nothing magical about that number. You can load to any OAL you want/need.
What specific bullet are you using? Have a link to a picture or the manufacturer?

Thanks guys
I just put them deep enough to where they looked right and left the calipers on the bench. They shoot fine.
I'm pretty new to reloading and there is an awful lot to learn.
