e3 vs Bullseye
Just got into my next to last lb of BE. Can't find it local but picked up a jug of e3 just because it was there.
I understand its less dense than BE?
How does it meter? I have Dillon, Hornady, RCBS and an old Lee disk measure.
Searched and found some posts here, most from 2019, anyone still using it?
I use mostly 185 LSWC swaged Magnus bullets.
TIA

E3 is much less dense than BE. I would suggest using data more similar to Clays. Maybe a tad less, by weight, than Clays data. My recall is that E3 is just a little less dense than Clays, but more dense than Trail Boss. There is some data, but not a great deal. If you can locate the Lee Powder density charts that should get you on track.

I have the Lee charts. Have they changed much since the mid 80's?Allgoodhits wrote:E3 is much less dense than BE. I would suggest using data more similar to Clays. Just bought the e3 today and thought I'd ramble on the net for some ideas. I'll warm up the shop tomorrow and play with the measures some. I read some folks had some issues getting consistent throws. I load 95% of my .45acp on a 1050.
Thanks

Re: e3 vs Bullseye
Found some loading information for E3 in 45 acp. Looked up Trail Boss also but it only seems to work for heavy (230gr) bullets. Not enough room in case for lighter bullets.

Re: e3 vs Bullseye
I use it exclusively for .45ACP (SA 1911A1) and 9mm (Sig P210A). Inexpensive, easy to find, they claim it is temperature-stable, and clean burning.
For .45ACP, 185 gr XTP, 3.8 gr, Starline brass, Fed 150 primer, 0.471" crimp, 1.220" OAL, gives about 725 fps MV with a 11# spring. 3.6 gr is a good starting point if you want to move a little bit up with a 185 gr JHP.
Everything else the same...3.6 gr with a Brazos 180 CSWC loaded at 1.260" OAL gives 714 fps MV. Accurate at 50 yds with the normal fliers.
3.7 gr with the Brazos 200 gr CSWC at 1.245" OAL gives about 775 fps MV. I was thinking that might be a sweet spot...I'm still working on the 200 gr bullet.

Re: e3 vs Bullseye
Many years ago, I worked up a .45 ACP load with e3. My results were much like tovaert. I used a 185 gr. Star swaged SWCHP bullet and 3.6 grains. My Dillon powder measure seems to throw accurate charges with it. Some buddies at the club started using the load with very good results. It is a very clean burning powder and great for bullseye pistol competition with the .45 ACP. Alliant Bullseye is more versatile, but if you are loading just for light target rounds e3 is very good. I am a little leery that Alliant has no reloading data for e3 in anything but 12 ga. It could be that they feel like they have plenty of other powders that work well for pistol, but it could be another reason.

Re: e3 vs Bullseye
Thank you for this information. I have 3 pounds of E3, and I wasn't going to use it because there is no load data. With the above info, I should be able to make some practice ammo that will work well at 50' where I do most of my practice shooting. I can save my WST for match ammo.

Just came back from the range. Loaded up some Brazos 160gr Hi Teck with 3.6gr e3. Shot great at 25yds. Felt like my 4.3gr Bullseye loads.
