Snap Caps With Holes
I just got a brand new (to me) classic old SW14-3 and am dying to dry fire it but my not so new 39sp snap caps have small holes in the center of the fake primer from prior use. I have ordered new snap caps but they will not arrive for several days. I have pictures but cannot figure out how to post them. However, I am sure someone here has had snap caps develop those holes from use.
Are they still safe to use with that tiny little hole in them?

Drill them out and glue pencil erasers in the enlarged holes.

Try a drywall anchor. Rimfire shooter use them for dryfire. Would have a hole in the center so no firing pin strike at all.sjs wrote:I just got a brand new (to me) classic old SW14-3 and am dying to dry fire it but my not so new 39sp snap caps have small holes in the center of the fake primer from prior use. I think the idea is to cushion the strike. Erasers are an old option

Use fired brass with the used primer in them.
Or fill the hole with Shoe Goo.
Or do the pencil eraser thing.

I do believe you are correct James. If I was desperate I might use the anchor with several round tooth picks jammed in the hole and cut off flush to the anchor.james r chapman wrote:I think the idea is to cushion the strike. Erasers are an old option
Rube Goldberg yes and necessity is the mother of invention.

I've dry fired many S&W revolvers many, many times with no snap caps. The only thing I use snap caps (wall anchors) for is rimfires.

Instead of pencil eraser get some UHMW. 1/4" round rod at McMaster Carr is $1.23/ foot. Shipping will cost more than the rod. I'm sure you can find it on ebay cheaper. UHMW will last a lot longer.

Just get these from Amazon. Good quality metal construction with rubber end piece. I got 357 version and so far about 500 strikes with no discernable wear at all. Why go through troubles of making ones when you can get these so cheap and they last?

This company makes them in many different caliber variants too.

Re: Snap Caps With Holes
Actually I like making my own by reloading without powder or primer with the bullet and brass I'm using. Little epoxy in the drilled out primer hole with UHMW as the primer to plug the hole works best for me since it is exactly the cartridge I'm using.
