Ammo logistics for the OH/IN Tour
Wow - The NJ Pistol site is really, really helpful. Much appreciated. Especially this table by Steve Turner et al.
http://www.njpistol.com/Camp_Perry_FAQ.asp#course
That has answered most of my questions. Just need help on 2 specific issues:-
Perry
M and P Service (Is this open to Civilians?) - Service 30
Atterbury
Preliminary Championship - what is involved/required????

Forgive me if this is obvious but keep in mind that service pistol, NTI & P100 require jacketed. Only other thought is bring extra!

Related but not as obvious:mspingeld wrote:Forgive me if this is obvious but keep in mind that service pistol, NTI & P100 require jacketed. Only other thought is bring extra!
For the Cardinal service pistol 900, lead is ok. However jacketed must be used for the EIC's.

In regards to the original question, I think the outline is good, just dependent on how much practice is beneficial to you.
For my personal case I only need enough ammo for practice to allow me to confirm zeros, about 100-150 rounds max for my 22 and 45, probably 50 rounds for revolver. That should keep my practice together for the week.

The NJPistol site has some helpful Perry tips, including ammo. http://www.njpistol.com/Camp_Perry_FAQ.asp

Re: Ammo logistics for the OH/IN Tour
Unless they have changed it, the warmup match at Perry consists of 3 NMC's shot back to back: 22, CF, 45. There is a lot of muscling your gear back and forth between the long and short lines.
NOTE: I haven't been in recent years; they might have changed it.

Does anyone have a source for the velcro strap he's using?
I had my box blown off the bench during my first outdoor match while we were downrange scoring targets. That was definitely a distraction. A velcro-closed cinch would be an ideal solution.

Re: Ammo logistics for the OH/IN Tour
You could make a strap, and add velcro but you need to guesstimate or know the bench dimensions. A rope or cord would suffice in a pinch. Don't get too complicated - you don't want the line waiting for you to move your equipment.SonOfAGun wrote:Vociferous wrote:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnVq0f_SWrU

Re: Ammo logistics for the OH/IN Tour
Having watched the excellent Steve Huff videos on preparation and techniques for Perry (thank you Vociferous) I am now realising that "less is more". I've developed a fancy Pelican style 6 gun box for air travel and it should work fine at Cardinal, Canton and Atterbury, but since there is usually only one gun needed per day at Perry and the repeated shifting 50-25 suggests that a small box specifically for Perry might be a better option. Hmmmm. One month to go!

Re: Ammo logistics for the OH/IN Tour
How many times have you been?
3 minute prep at Perry means just that. you want to spend time putting stakes in? BTW can't go in front of the benches during prep. posting targets means just that, cannot touch your box at all. behind the ready line means just that. The National Matches are run by the book.
Also, it is possible to shoot an X without a spotting scope set up. People without stakes in the ground break 2600 there every year. Many people simply close their boxes when the wind kicks up, and it always does, and just focus on what they need to do.

Re: Ammo logistics for the OH/IN Tour
A simple solution I found for holding my box down at Camp Perry is to use a soft bungee cord with plastic hooks. I looked at this video and it seems like that is what Steve is using too except he secures his over the top of the box somehow. My box has small D-Rings for the carry strap installed on each end and I just use the plastic hook through those. Very quick and easy to put on without going forward of the firing line (well I guess my hand does for a brief time). I will take a measurement of the length next time I'm home but I do know they make an adjustable version if you find you need different lengths for different ranges. Perry is the only place I use mine so the one length suits me fine.SonOfAGun wrote:Vociferous wrote:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rnVq0f_SWrU

When I first started 23+ years ago, one of the experienced had a set of bungee cords on his box. When I asked him about it, he just said it was to keep the box from blowing off the bench. I immediately saw the wisdom of it & have had a set on my box ever since. ND winds may rank second only to Wyoming for match days. I think it's a trophy we pass back & forth to Kate S.

So, having received lots of good advice above and trying my best to interpret the event program's I have come up with this summary of my particular ammo needs for the entire tour. Plus a little more as contingency of course. YMMV!!!!
I'm still not sure whether the Perry M&P Match is open to civilians, but will pack enough ammo just in case.

Re: Ammo logistics for the OH/IN Tour
Awesome summary, Roy!
I suggest adding about 10% (or at least some) for each category in order to accommodate possible alibis.
And of course those who will shoot team matches, need account for that too.
That is what I'm planning for.

We (civilians) shoot the M&P match at the Eastern Games, I assume we can at Perry.
