'61 Colt NM 1911 - Questions
I inherited a nice older Colt NM 1911. I'd like to use it for EIC matches. I have a few questions.
1. I have a SA 1911A1 wad gun with a beavertail grip safety. I find that more comfortable due to a tendon/muscle problem between my thumb and forefinger. Is there a drop-in beavertail grip safety (or one that only requires minor fitting) that can be used in place of the Colt's GI grip safety? Note that I ground and blended the frame lugs on the SA 1911 for the beavertail safety (it had not been done when I bought it), which turned out very well. In this case, however, I'd rather not modify the Colt's frame if I don't have to. The Colt has the original spur hammer.
2. The factory Colt grips are pretty worn and the wood has compressed somewhat where the grip screws lock them in place, so the grips are loose. I'd like to replace them. Is there are preferred grip material/manufacturer? I realize that this is a pretty open-ended question, but I don't really want to experiment a lot if there is some degree of consensus. I'd also like to be add skateboard tape to the grips, so I was thinking about smooth grips. My hands sweat a lot; I use that powdered grip enhancer.
3. At a 4# trigger pull setup (with what is likely the original Colt sear spring), the trigger has a perceivable take-up (but not excessive) or roll before the hammer drops. I suspect it has the original sear/disconnector. My SA 1911 is very crisp 3.5#, which I prefer. Is the best way to match the two (in feel, 1/2# apart in pull weight) to replace the sear and hammer? I'm not experienced with drop-in fire control parts, but if someone has experience with these guns and had success with drop-in parts, I'd try that route. If it's best to have those parts installed and fitted by a BE gunsmith, then so be it.
Thanks for any suggestions...

Small O-rings might tighten the loose grips.

I will second the Kensight shark grips, I am a checkered wood kinda guy but on a 1911 those Kensight shark grips are great.

It's going to be difficult to find a drop in beavertail that will work with your Colt. Wilson probably would be the best bet. Fair warning, unless someone has replaced the sear already you're going to find a very small spring and a sear depressor bar when you take the bottom end apart. And if you want to shoot your Colt in EIC matches you're going to have to have the 4lb trigger pull.

+1 to KC. The wilson drop in bevertail will be close but not perfect, in my experience it requires some fit for function AND for comfort.
As far as slabs, sharkskins are good, but I have a slight preference to VZ.
In my opinion it is much easier to have a Bullseye smith do the trigger work than dropping in parts and hoping the give the desired results.

Re: '61 Colt NM 1911 - Questions
I was under the impression that the spring and sear depressor bar began use on the Series 70 Gold Cups (mine has a 1961 NM serial number and is not a Gold Cup). It does not have those parts.
Thank you for the suggestions on grips, the WC safety, and the trigger work. I was also aware of the 4# pull requirement, and have already experimented changing the (sear) spring leg to vary the pull weight.
