Range Officer Discontinued
Now that Springfield Armory has discontinued the Range Officer line, is there a recommendation for a different model or brand of beginner 1911?

Maybe something new is coming down the pike?

Dang they even discontinued the RO Elite except the 10mm, it was a nice package with the cerakote finish and composite grips. Apparently we were the only ones buying them or they'd still be available or their margin wasn't very good.

Or, maybe it's time to rethink the "service pistol" requirement. Maybe the Perry schedule should be .22, center fire (not including .45), and .45. Leave the "service pistol" concept to CMP which is not a caliber but a type of handgun (1911 or 1911 A1 style) and move on. There are a lot of ways to shoot 45 beyond 1911. Just thinking.

I made an error above. NRA doesn't limit .45 cal to the 1911 platform. It appears that CMP does but its rules are so confusing that's it's hard to tell. That said, is there a non-1911 handgun that can compete in accuracy to the best 1911 or 2011 handgun at 50 yards?

CMP does NOT limit 45 cal to a 1911. I know a few people who have made P100 with an XD in 45. See approved service pistol list. Also CMP Match Gun rules do not specify a 1911 for 45.msmith44 wrote:I made an error above. NRA doesn't limit .45 cal to the 1911 platform. As far as accuracy at 50 with 45 caliber non-1911 platform, Model 25/625 smith, above mentioned xd, Pardini GT45 and I think a few people have had good results with a CZ97. However as far as availability and reliability a match tuned 1911 is hard to beat.

GT45 and CZ97 against a stock 1911? Hard to choose between.

Personally 1911 everyday of the week and 2x on Sunday. I get that the RO is discontinued but out of the box mine shot 3” without effort. Honestly most people shooting in this game do not have stock guns anyways.Wobbley wrote:GT45 and CZ97 against a stock 1911? Hard to choose between.

I hadn't heard about CZ buying Colt, might be promising since Colt didn't seem to be doing much wirh the brand, hope they start innovating with their pistol lineup again.

As far as CZ, I have heard good things about their 22 rifles and shotguns, especially for price point. In all fairness, those particular disciplines do not hold my interest, but one can hope it shows promise.zanemoseley wrote:I hadn't heard about CZ buying Colt, might be promising since Colt didn't seem to be doing much wirh the brand, hope they start innovating with their pistol lineup again.

I'm pretty sure that Cajun Gun works can build (read customize) you a very competitive 9mm bullseye pistol from a CZ. That said, most of CZ's competition pistols are double stacks built for the "run & gun" games. They're pretty dominant in that market.

I can tell you this, in the last 10 years CZ has done a far better job at making products people want to buy, Colt seems more interesting in dropping products, the reintroduction of the Python is the only thing they've done of any interest and they managed to screw that up pretty good on the front end but they're still selling all they can make. Will be interested to see if CZ brings back Colts AR's.

TISA a Turkish Company makes a nice 1911 that would be a good gun for a base build.

Cz might make a killer Gold Cup. Dan Wesson quality control is pretty darn good. Of course barrel fit will be marginal, but that’s a given.

How does the Ruger SR1911 Target compare with the SA Range Officer? Externally, aside from being made of stainless steel, it looks very similar.

Re: Range Officer Discontinued
I'm sad to see the Range Officer go because it's a good balance between performance and affordability. Great gun for people who want to start competing in Bullseye and EIC matches.
If a new shooter asked me for a recommendation today and budget was an issue, I think I'd suggest looking for a used Range Officer that's in good shape.
That said, I'm also curious if anyone knows of a 1911 that will hold the 10 ring out of the box at 50 yds, has adjustable sights and cost less than $1000 new.
