Shooting with non dominant eye
Weird question and I didn’t find much info. I am right eye dominant and shoot right handed. However I have large floaters in my right eye that are often as not directly in my line of sight. Left eye has some but not as bothersome.
Would it make sense to try shooting with my left eye? If so is it simply a matter of a new grip on the pistol? Arm angle or canting my wrist? Any tips?
Thanks!

Yes, it can be done successfully.
Generally a grip change is needed.
1911 seemed the easiest. Pardini/Benelli needed the grip ‘twisted’ a bit
I found it much easier with .22 than .45
Recoil recovery took some getting used too

Hmmm... I know there have been discussions about this. I don't know why it doesn't come up in a search.
Yes, many people shoot cross-dominant. You may need to adjust your grip to align the gun with your other eye. Custom grip makers will build it into the grip if you tell them. Basically they cut the grips with the gun rotated 5-7 degreed in the wood.

Jim, thank you. I’m shooting a HS Victor and will shoot a 1911 after some more “learning”. I’ll experiment dry fire and go from there.
Steve, I thought I’d seen a thread on it, but cross dominant and cross eyed did help. Not sure what the term would be.
Thank you both!

Re: Shooting with non dominant eye
I’ve shot both left and right handed. For me not a big deal using my dominant right eye with my left hand. Still same process; grip gun, aim gun, pull trigger, shoot 10.
Trigger control is once again most important fundamental.

I keep a bottle of eye drops in my pistol box, it helps with the floaters.
Just can't imagine shooting with my non-dominant eye, though.

Re: Shooting with non dominant eye
I'm ambidextrous and have no eye dominance, so I can shoot with any possible eye/arm combination. The only issue for me when shooting with one or another eye is making sure that second eye is totally covered with occluder. Rest is body position, grip and process as Jon, Jim and Steve stated.

Re: Shooting with non dominant eye
Well I gave it a try with my Izzy and it seemed natural enough. It’s a right hand grip. I’ll try left handed at the range this evening with a 22 and maybe 1911.
I appreciate the comments. Gives me confidence. I will also give left handed a good run to see how I like it. Seems reasonable.
And Jim, your search term brought up two good threads. Thank you!

Re: Shooting with non dominant eye
Well both eyes open aligning sights with my non dominant eye seems to work pretty good. Before I would keep one eye gently closed. Hmmm

Re: Shooting with non dominant eye
I switched to shooting left handed due to tremors in my right. Started by canting the gun to align the sights with my dominant right eye. More recently, I've switched to using my left eye as well. Better sight picture by not looking out the corner of my progressives. I use some scotch tape on the right lens as an occluder.
At some point I'll set up some Champions, and probably start there with my left.

Wes, you’re right up the road from me. My eye doc steered me away from progressives because of the fishbowl effect, so I have fixed distance glasses for shooting.
If you will be at tomorrow’s match at ARC, please say hello. I’ll be the tyro with a high standard victor shooting 22 only.

Re: Shooting with non dominant eye
Okay guys.... I may be old but I am cross dominant. Sure you can get all twisted up and shoot but the idea is to be comfortability aligned. You can shoot crossed up but a 2700 is a long drawn out affair. To shoot your best for round 1 through round 270 you must be aligned. The answer is simple. Wear a blinder on the dominant eye. FWIW I do best with my right but can do most things with either hand. On a calm rested day I can shoot with my nondominant eye. However when I get tired or the least bit flustered the brain takes over and a blinder is required. To prevent the happening I wear a blinder when I compete. Back when I was a young iron sight shooting 2600 club member I shot without a cap and wore the blinder on my classes. The All Army Coach came to me at a NRA Regional and said that if I had to wear the blinder I needed to wear a cap to get the blinder away from my eye. Added that wearing the blinder close to my eye restricted the light to that eye and will affect the other eye over a day's shooting.
For a side thing... Did you realize that your dominant eye can change?

...on the original post if you shoot left eyed, shoot left handed. Blinder goes on the right eye.

Re: Shooting with non dominant eye
Exactly what I did, as I am cross dominant too.
Left eye dominant and shot right handed. Decided to give Bullseye a try so I switched to shooting left handed as it was more comfortable as my neck doesn't swivel like it used to.
I find that an occluder over my non dominant eye helps a lot to stay focused.

Re: Shooting with non dominant eye
This would be a non issue except for the floaters in my dominant eye. During a session at the range last night I started getting confused. My left eye quickly came “up to speed” aligning and dominating while shooting right handed. Seems like I’m overthinking this and should just deal with the floaters. I have enough things to learn ingrain and keep straight.

If you have not already done so, take a look at Dr. Norman Wong's articles, including a short one on floaters.

Tony, I had read Dr Wongs articles before, but it was worth rereading after shooting some actual matches. Thanks for the reminder. Really good stuff.
