Load for S&W 16-4
I'm not having much luck with loading for my 6 inch, 16-4. I've used the following which will hold the black on the short line but not the ten consistently.
1.7 BE/ 98 grain Speer, 1.8 WST/ 98 grain Dardus, 1.7 BE/ 98 grain Dardus, and a few others. Any god loads from those who shoot revolvers?
Thanks

Hornady XTP100 JHP's group extremely well at 50 yards in my 16-4, sorry I don't have my reloading journal with me this week, can't remember the recipe, will update when I get it. My gun is a 32 Magnum and I use the longer magnum brass, but I've not tested those bullets in normal length 32SWL brass - it might not make any difference. My recipe is well below maximum 32SWL pressures.

I don’t load for revolvers, but I do load for 32S&W long. I swage 100g cast bullets and add a hollow base. Was getting a lot of kick in my Pardini, and backed it off, and backed it off. I load 1.4 of WST. Still cutting nice round holes at the 25 yard line. I also think in that long of case it is extremely important the the expander die leaves a nice round regular bell to set the bullet on. I have had really good luck using a Lyman M die for case mouth expansion.Steve K wrote:I'm not having much luck with loading for my 6 inch, 16-4. Seat flush on the case mouth and then do a nice profile crimp.

Thanks for the information. Can't find any XTP100, but I will continue looking. I'll try 98 gr. Speer with 1.4 WST.
Thanks

I used to think reloading was about powder and bullets. I no longer think that. While the powder and the bullets are of importance, sometimes with the long case finicky loads, you need to pay the most attention to the dies, the seating, and the crimp.
If your revolver still won’t shoot, it may need some work on the cylinders. Or the barrel.

Ok maybe I missed something but isn’t one of the most accurate loads a model 14 can shoot is a 158 SWC?

the part you missed is that the 16-4 is a .32 not .38

Re: Load for S&W 16-4
The recipe I prefer is XTP100 jhp bullets over 4.0 grains of Power Pistol. Almost no crimp at 0.330. COAL 1.325. I am using Starline 32 magnum brass. I have not tried this recipe in 32swl brass.
I saw velocities on my Chrono just over 900fps. I have not RR tested, but have shot several Harry Reeves matches with good results.
LenV recommended 5.0 of Power Pistol and aim for 1,000fps, but I found that to be too sharp. Tried 4.5, then settled at 4.0.
I hope to be able to do more testing and RR groups at some point. Just need time and patience!

Stating the obvious...Don't put a magnum case load in a s&w long case.
I liked the 32 swc cast with 2.0 of BE but a lot less powder with a deep seated wc bullet. 1.4 wst, 1.7 BE, 1.9-231. Enjoy
As you know, Dave FC60 is the man on 32s!

Re: Load for S&W 16-4
Greetings Bruce,
Thanks for highlighting my omission of what brass I used.
I have corrected the post.
I use 32 H&R Mag brass in my M16.
I do not care to use the S&W Long cases.
Cheers,
Dave
