Sometime you just gotta
Took the 41 and ruger out today
Wanted to swap the dots
Aim point to the 41 and rmr to the rugger
Damn it wrong rail and the 41 mags won’t seat
Out comes the dreaded dremmel
Little wiz on the grips problem solved
Big wiz on the weaver style rail and that’s solved too
( but I do have the right rail in route )
Gotta do what ya gotta do

which do you like more?
Hi,
New guy here considering purchasing my first target gun. You've got 2 of the 3 that have been recommended to me. Wondering which you prefer and why? Any advice you can offer would be appreciated. I'm not new to shooting, just to target shooting.
Thanks!

Re: Sometime you just gotta
I am a S&W fan in general. I may or may not own 11 of them from model 640s to PPC9s. But the model 41 from everything I read about is not a reliable pistol without good gunsmithing. However, it is accurate out of the box.
I have shot other accurate but unreliable pistols in bullseye matches. They make learning to shoot well VERY difficult and frustrating.
I may own a Ruger KMK678GC (MKII). It is reliable and accurate. I would highly recommend it it to anyone. Very good starter bullseye pistol. And they can be upgraded by you or a gunsmith. My .02.

Can’t prove that by me
I’ve owned two 41s over the decades
Both ran fine out of the box
Rugers too run well out of the box
After owning
41s
Hammerlis
Rugers
And at one time a FAS 22 short for rapid fire pistol
The only one that didn’t run perfect without help was the fas
It’s also the gun o shot the best and have the most regreat about selling
It really fit me perfectly
One day I’ll find another

Go over to the S&W semi auto forum. Lots of complaints about model 41s. Mostly newer ones but also older ones. And all those guys are a S&W fans.
Glad you had good luck. I hear they are fine pistols.

Another opinion…lol
Check out the Walther Exesse…Hammerli barrel accuracy, not too expensive. Well balanced, customizable with grips, and weights to suit your needs.
If you’re interested, pm me.

You best bet is to get a .22, buy the best you can afford. However most are quite accurate out of the box. I would avoid revolvers, they will put you at a disadvantage to everyone shooting an auto-loader. All the top shooters are shooting auto-loaders. Yes there are a few good shooters that use revolvers but they are not winning matches yet do give the top guys a run for their money! The 41 has it's ups and downs, there was a time when they did not shoot well. Floyd Aikman (passed away) would make them into shooters. Back in the late 90's they came new in the box with poor barrel fit, I'm told things got better when S&W purchased new CNC machinery. If you can find an Aikman 41 it will shoot!

But I’ve found that like most things there’s always good and bad
I’ve only got a couple hundred rounds through mine to date but it’s accurate and runs well
Only issue is the safet engages but I’m putting that down too the target grips I got are interfering with it and it’s not fully disengaging
After Xmas I’ll get to playing with it
It is always nice to have a spare

I had one of these... stalled out at 810 for a year after buying it as a new shooter... bought my wife a buckmarck and went to sight it in, shot 855 with sighters... bench rested the 41, wouldn't hold the 8 ring at any distance... traded. It even up for a glock 35 and never looked backFroneck wrote:Back in the late 90's they came new in the box with poor barrel fit, I'm told things got better when S&W purchased new CNC machinery. Many moons ago, I started out this game with a Ruger MK I with 5 1/2" bull barrel. It was accurate and reliable. The trigger needed work. These days there are a multitude of accessories, including trigger kits. I think that the Ruger, is still a hard to beat starter pistol for this game.

JP, I've got a Ruger Mark II and a Mark IV, volquarsten triggers in both . Good shooters, very accurate and reliable. I am thinking about selling the Mark II, it just sets in a box now. It was my starter gun and brought on the addiction. I bought a Hammerli X-esse and it is my go to gun now. Very light and a great trigger. Welcome to the club !
I used to be an alcoholic , now I'm addicted to punching holes in paper targets (and chocolate).

Addicted to chocolate. Is that a problem? Maybe I need to find a program…
