Recommendations for grips Empty Recommendations for grips

Post by Dockokol 8/12/2013, 4:32 pm

I'm in the process of ordering a set of grips for a Smith Model 46 and really dont know which way to go.  I can order a set from Fung and adjust the bottom or order a "custom made" from Herretts for about the same price.  I have REALLY big hands, size 15 ring, so I was leaning towards the Harretts in fear that the Fung wouldnt adjust large enough.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.  Doc Kokol

Herret Nationals are ajustable and priced right. I have a set on my 1911 and customized them to fit my hand.

Randal Fung buils his grips from a drawing of your hand size so you will get the best fit that way.

I'm testing a variety of grips on all my match grade 22LR pistols (Hammerli, Pardini, S&W, HS, Benelli, Volquartsen). Jury is still out but I have to say that, so far, the Sile grips on a High Standard Victor and Herret Nationals on a S&W Model 41 are favorites . . . so far.

I like the "field grips" on my Hammerli 215 too; a lot!

I'm also trying out Vitarbo, Rink, and a few from lesser known makers.

I wear a 3X or 4X glove size (depending on what I can find!) and I had Randall Fung make an oversized set of grips for my Model 41, based on a scan of my hand.  They fit me pretty well.  The problem I have is that because they are thicker on the back strap, the web of my hand is pushed up and a roll of skin sticks up and gets cut by the slide if I'm not careful.  It can really bother my concentration to have bleeding cuts on the top of my thumb joint while I'm shooting.  That said, I think any grip that was thick enough for my hand would have the same problem.  Also, the trigger is still a little "close", and I need to find a trigger shoe, of some kind, to lengthen the trigger pull some.  ~Gary

Thanks for the input.  Has anyone had custom Herrett grips built?  They ask for a tracing with and without pressure.  I understand the with pressure it to give them some idea of "hand fat".
