Woah - this is hard. I'm soliciting  input for this.

Information so far - barrel slugs to .3138 (measured with a micrometer not calipers before the real engineers savage me) and .3139 on two tests.
It's an MG4 (tube mag) so COAL is limited to .966 to get 5 in the mag. Haven't experimented with longer loads in the chamber.
Best result so far is a 4 inch group (off sandbags) with Magtech ammo. Lapua factory was about 4.5 inches.
Handloads with Missouri Bullet Company DEWC (claimed to be .313 - measures to average .311-.312) best group 6-7 inches with 1.5gr N310
With Speer HBWC (.314) best group of 10 was 8 within 3 inches but with 2 fliers about 5 inches away. With 1.7gr N310.
I have some Bear Creek .314 HBWC on order.
All using CCI 500 primers.
Roll crimp right on the edge of the shoulder of the Speer.
Tested loads from 1.4 to 2.0 gr N310.

At 25yds the Speer with 1.6gr N310 shoots one ragged hole for as long as I want to feed it so I don't think my technique on sandbags is the primary issue.

Anyone got any suggestions on what to test / try / measure ? Or are my expectations not in line with reality.

50 yd accuracy is pretty dicey. Guns are generally made and rifled for 25 meters.
Personally, my reloads have never beaten factory ammo.
Keep velocity around 625-700 fps

A buddy of mine with his MG4 uses Lapua brass and 1.4 VV310 and Lapua hbwc. They shoot sub 2” from a rest at 50. I’ve never gotten good results from Magtech.

Greetings,

The MG4 barrels shoot very well. I tested one a while back.

Bullet fit is the key. You need a 0.314" HBWC bullet of GOOD quality.

H&N were the best; although, no longer available in the USA nor Canada.

Bumping up the Speer 98 HBWC to 0.314" is the second best. Here you need to invest in a bullet swage.

Cheers,

Dave

Greetings,

Interesting,

I have not been able to duplicate the accuracy of select lots of Lapua commercial ammo.

I have tested both the older and new "black" coated bullets with no success.

A fellow shooter, former US Shooting Team, gifted me some Lapua commercial. It shot solid X-ring at 50 yards???

Waiting for a small USA startup company to begin swaging 32 HBWC bullets. Might be a long wait.

It is possible to import the H&N bullets direct from Germany. It requires a person with some money and an import broker.

Other options are to make friends with a pilot that does European flights.

Cheers,

Dave

Hmmm, wondering if a factory cannelure maks the difference, like with the old 38 Matchmaster loads?

Better combustion consistency.

With the cannelure, do you put the crimp on that part of the bullet, for extra powder efficiency?

Yes, it bites into the bullet, that's why you see two lines on some sidewalls
