38 special ammo question
What bullet weights are used for distinguished revolver?
Also what are some good loads for the bullet weights.
Thanks
Jeff

Re: 38 special ammo question
Must be 158gr, either round nose or semi-wadcutter. Can be lead or jacketed

Re: 38 special ammo question
I used 158 gr Zero SWC and 3.2 gr WST. Worked for me.

Re: 38 special ammo question
NRA DR and the new CMP DSR have differen ammo requirements. The CMP version is much less restrictive. I used Federal American Eagle 158gr RN for the long line and Zero 158gr SWC with 3.0gr WST to get the NRA DR. For CMP I'll be using the Federal American Eagle again for the long line and probably 148gr HBWC with 2.7 WST for the short line. Hope this helps.

Re: 38 special ammo question
I did not know you could use 148 gr full wadcutters in the CMP matches. I have waded thru pages of CMP rules and cannot find the rules concerning required ammo. It is good news since my revolver shoots the full wadcutters much better.
Thanks

Re: 38 special ammo question
NRA and CMP Rule books have indexes at the end to help with searches. Sometimes they are spot on, other times maybe off a little.
CMP - Ammunition - page 43
NRA - Ammunition - section 3.17 (and 3.17 references to 3.3 (e) for Distinguished Revolver

Re: 38 special ammo question
Specifically for CMP Service Revolver
Rule 4.4.3 ' Service Revolver Ammunition' from 2022 Rule book:
"CMP Service Revolver competitors may fire any safe, single projectile ammunition."
NRA Precision Pistol Distinguished Revolver Rules ( dated 2020) 3.3 Distinguished Revolver
(e)"Ammunition- Any safe .38 caliber ammunition using the 158 grain round nose or Semi-Wadcutter bullet only."
edit: can be found on the pages listed by CR, felt it best to add here to add clarity

Re: 38 special ammo question
I wish 4.4.1 were revised a bit. I think I know what they mean but it's technically confusing.
"Non-jacketed, wad-cutter or lead bullets may not be used."
I believe we are all of an assumption that the bullets will have lead cores. There are alternatives but not for us. The issue is with lead without a metallic jacket. The prior sentence already makes this clear so the mention of lead here is as unnecessary as it is ~incorrect. The reference to wadcutters - does this also exclude any semi wadcutter? We already established the bullet will be jacketed. Now we're talking about the shape, but it's unfortunately vague on this likely common question.
