Camp Atterbury 2022 Empty Camp Atterbury 2022

Post by Orpanaut Wed Jul 20, 2022 11:39 am

As a long time Perry shooter but a first time Atterbury shooter I thought I'd share some first impressions.

First of all, Camp Atterbury is much larger and more difficult to navigate than Camp Perry.  At Perry, you turn into the main gate, drive about half a mile in a straight line, and everything is right there within walking distance.  Camp Atterbury is not so pedestrian friendly and the NRA signage is much less prominent.

Things Perry shooters have come to expect that aren't present (as far as I can tell) at Atterbury:
> The NRA store
> Commercial Row
> An air gun range
> A practice range
> Armorers' trailers
> On base dining options
> Eagles and boaters in the impact area
> A cannon to fire before morning colors
> Mayflies
> Ankle deep water at the firing line
> A turning target system from the beginning of the previous century

Things that are less common at Atterbury:
> Wind
> Shade
> Competitors
> Mud

The range itself has a concrete floor and a metal roof, two big improvements over Perry.  Unfortunately, as others have noted, the range is designed so that the firing line is right at the forward edge of the covered area so competitors can rest in the shade but not shoot in it.

Today's weather: Hot and humid.

I just finished shooting the .22 match on the first relay at Atterbury.

The weather was beautiful: mid-to-high 70 degree range (probably 80+ by the end) with a light breeze under a cloudless blue sky.

The match went well. There was only one range alibi and that was caused by a target frame not being securely bolted to its base. It was fixed quickly. I did notice that several of the short line targets were not fully edged between strings, with some showing the front of the target and others the rear.

I'm an average-sized man and the height of the targets did not bother me. We were repairing with full targets, not repair centers, so that did require stapling all the way at the top.

The benches (folding tables) are low, probably 30-32" high, which is similar to Perry but lower than what's used at most ranges.

I didn't shoot very well today but I did have the privilege of scoring a 100-10X rapid fire target, which is something I've never seen before.

It looks like there are 4 on base dining places.

King Hall, Atterbury Room -Schoolhouse Road and 21st Street
Dining Facility (DFAC) - 2nd Street North and Eggleston Street just a couple blocks north of the NRA checkin
All Ranks Club - on 5th Street just west of Eggleston
Indiana Military Academy - Headquarters Road at about King Street

Here is a map of Atterbury-

Are the on base eateries open to civilians?

By the way, I tried to find a short cut to the range this morning and drove by the Edinburgh Correctional Facility, a minimum security prison located inside Camp Atterbury. That was strange.

In regards to attendance, there were fewer than 90 shooters between first and second relays combined today. I don't know if there was a third relay but that's still less than half the number of shooters who competed at the NRA National Matches just four years ago.

The pistol range has space for 200 shooters per relay so there's plenty or room for growth.

Thanks for the dining info. I will try to explore those options next year.

Has anyone here stayed in the barracks at Atterbury? From the outside they look a lot like the barracks at Perry.

In general, civilians can use “facilities for basic needs” on base.  It generally covers ready-to-eat food and drink and sometimes other things depending on how sticklerish the commanders get.  The PX and Commissary are not included.

I was hoping there would be more shooters this year since covid seems to be down.

They scheduled for 3 relays, but the squadding only has two shown.
The schedule also shows ranges 19 and 20 and they are only using half of range 19's capacity.

Today the third relay at 12 pm was the team matches.

The 22 results show 86 people with scores, plus 12 with 0 for a score. Yikes.

As compared to the 450+ (assuming I counted correctly) at Perry.  It would appear that the consumers are expressing an opinion.

The PX is open, and the adjacent USPS, very helpful staff. SubWay across street from PX.

ALL ranks Club offers decent food at reasonable price and quick service.

Not yet tried the other dining options mentioned above.

A few guys I know are using the huts - big space, few guests, all are very happy. I used the "suites" last year. Well appointed, convenient and good value. I'm in the RV park on base this year. Full hookups, widely spaced slots, inexpensive, very quiet at night.

This is a wild guess, but I don't think people are happy with the NRA moving the match from Perry causing the attendance to be low.

Only 76 competitors recorded a score in the NRA National Championship in 2022.

Sadly, I predict that numbers are likely to be even lower in 2023.

Well, CMP have a match organizer who is a passionate bullseye shooter and still one of the best of us. I believe he is sincere in wanting to make the match the best it can be. The target turning system is finally emerging from the 19th century. They have a results system that needs further tweaking for classes - but I was still seeing my relay 1 results on line before relay 2 had finished slow fire. Armorers trucks for when things go wrong (like the trigger doesn't make weight and you forget to bring *that* hex key to adjust it). Commercial row - a bit sparse admittedly but I still got a year's worth of 22 at reasonable (in today's terms) prices. Air pistol range.  Hell, we even had good weather this year - not that I believe that will be repeated any time soon. Open slots in the RV park.

Would I like covered firing points and 2 target lines - yes, but moving isn't that big a deal once you get used to it and, quel surprise, we actually did get enough time this year. At least I didn't feel rushed.  Single backers and stapled centers are a lot easier to deal with when it's windy as well. TBH the whole week felt a lot more relaxed than the NRA days - although my history there only goes back to 2012.

Sadly, i was one of the Zero Score people! The COVID got me at the beginning of Perry… so left for home. I sent messages to both CMP and NRA. The CMP responded…… NRA, not so much!!!!

One of the major complaints about the NRA Nationals at Camp Perry was the cost of entry. Has that changed any? And how does the cost of registering to shoot the NRA's 2700 at Atterbury compare with the cost of registering to shoot the CMP's 2700 at Perry?
