Danger Online Empty Danger Online

Post by Boxturtle 9/1/2022, 7:14 pm

I just visited smith-wessonforum.c*m/ and my computer was locked and a voice-over warned me of dire consequences if I tried to defeat the scammer.  I've seen it before, but I have high-quality anti-virus protection.  So I shut down my browser using Task Manager and started a manual scan.  I'm okay, but please be careful out there.

P.s.  I inserted the * in the link to deactivate it.

Working fine for me.

I'm guessing that the danger lies elsewhere.

It could have come from one of sites hosting the ads displayed.

I just went there and had no issues.

Please make sure to apply updates to your web browser(s) e.g. Google Chrome as soon as there's an update. This type of "drive by" attack generally requires the victim to be running a vulnerable browser. On desktop in Google Chrome in the upper right corner there is an orange or red oval to click titled Update each time there's a software patch/fix for security issues.

My browser is constantly updated and it didn't protect me.  Quality anti-virus is worth the money.

Or simply switch to Mac plus use more secure browser (e.g. Opera) with built-in adblocks. Smile

Had a similar experience on my Mac.  Just deleted the message and everything was OK. I have a malware detection/eradication program, but I caught it before the .exe tried to execute.

Yes, it is a jungle out there - beware of phishers!!

Do you run Malwarebytes in addition to the other ant-virus software?

I've used it, and trusted it, for decades.

Actually, I have the router in stealth mode.  Even with that some used to attempt to slip through.  Hence the need for Malwarebytes.  Given that the security is tighten as far as I care to do at the moment, Malwarebytes is all that one needs.

If you tighten the router down to stealth, one can go even further like only allowing a couple of TCP/IP ports to be open such as 443, 80 and maybe one more.  Did that on a Linux machine and the IT Security guys wanted me to open her up so they could do an Nmap scan.

IT security is just a little work, common sense and constant monitoring....
