Iron sight glare
Hi fellow enthusiasts,
My Smith & Wesson 27-2 stock iron sights can at times reflect some glare. This happens when I shot in my private range in my shop. Very annoying to aim well. I prefer shooting the stock irons. I would appreciate some suggestions.
PS, a black marker doesn't help.
Thank you.

Re: Iron sight glare
Zins says a cigar lighter
Founder says a lighted strip of masking tape creates a good soot.
Carbide lighter makes the flattest black
Acetylene works well also

If you don't want to play with fire buy a can of Birchwood Casey Sight Black.

Re: Iron sight glare
Does anyone know which type of cigar lighter Brian Zins was referring to?

Re: Iron sight glare
This question got me searching and I found a recommendation to take a lighter to a plastic spoon and get it burning to get a good sooty flame.
I tried it using a clear plastic spoon on a pellet pistol and it put a dead flat black on the front sight.
Won’t win any style points, but it was free and easy to try it out.

Re: Iron sight glare
Way back before I switched to red dots, I used a disposable butane lighter to blacken sights.
they are cheap, small, convenient, effective, also usable for smoking bullet molds too.
There is no messing with carbide and water and easily replaceable at any store.

Re: Iron sight glare
This is the best answer. Lighting a twist of masking tape works almost as well. With the calcium carbide there is some cleanup after. Verify how to order the calcium carbide before you order the smoker. I just buy it at Perry or have a friend bring back for me.shanneba wrote:Also available here- ($5 higher price but $19 less shipping at least to Indiana)

I’ll add my recommendation for masking tape and a lighter. Works pretty well and cheap.
Good luck.

Does residual sight blacking promote corrosion?

Re: Iron sight glare
I use a Ray-Vin Carbide Lamp and have never had any corrosion issues. I almost never wipe the soot off the sights after use either.

Re: Iron sight glare
I’ve never seen any evidence of corrosion from using masking tape. I don’t intentional clean it off but it gets smudged during handling sometimes so it gets touched up periodically. It comes off during gun cleaning so it gets reapplied after that too all with no I’ll effect.
